The Gustavus women’s basketball team improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC with a 74-43 victory over St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. on Saturday afternoon. Jess Vadnais led the Gusties in scoring with 21 points.
Gustavus used a 14-4 run to extend its lead to 15 points at 31-16 with 5:36 left in the first half. The Gusties continued to pull away from the Cardinals and took a 22-point lead (43-21) into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, St. Mary’s would get no closer than 24 points and Gustavus would hold its biggest lead of the game at 33 points (73-40) with 1:40 left in the game.
Gustavus placed three scorers in double figures including Vadnais with 21, Bri Monahan with 13, and Julia Schultz with 10. The Gusties shot 38.1 percent from the field (24-63) and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (21-24).
Gustavus will head to Moorhead, Minn. on Monday night to face Concordia.
