Gundersen Sets School Record in 500 Free as Women’s Swimming Finishes Second at Carthage Invitational

The Gustavus women’s swimming team scored 800 points and finished second to St. Cloud State with 1,130 points at the Carthage Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Gusties were led by Carrie Gundersen, who finished first in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, and placed third in the 1,650 free.

The Gusties were led by Carrie Gundersen (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), who finished first in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, and placed third in the 1,650 free.

Gundersen had another big weekend for the Gusties as she finished first in the 500 freestyle with a school record time of 5:12.06. The previous mark was 5:13.06 set by Ann Marie Miller in 2002. Gundersen also finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.99 and 3rd in the 1,650 free with a time of 18:25.39.

Sarah Koepp (Fy., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley)
also performed well for the Gusties as she finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.60) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.15).

The Gusties also scored well in the relays as the 400 free relay team of Janae Piehl (Fy., Hutchinson, Minn.), Sara Pfau (Jr., Bismarck, North Dakota/Century), Jonna Berry (Fy., Hastings Minn.) placed second (3:41.64), the 200 free relay placed third (1:42.27), and the 800 free relay placed 4th (8:17.18).

Gustavus will now break for finals and the Christmas Holiday. The team’s next meet will be January 13 at the St. John’s/St. Ben’s Invitational.
