The Gustavus men’s swimming team opened its 2006 dual meet schedule with a 169-113 win over Minnesota State University, Mankato, while the Gustavus women’s swimming team dropped its dual opener to MSU, Mankato 132-168. The meet was held at the Lund Natatorium on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus.
Gustavus Men’s Swimming Highlights
Freshman Skylar Davis set a new pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle as he finished first in a time of 9:49.1. Davis set the record in his first competition in the Lund Natatorium of his career.
Ben Hanson finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a fast early season time of 1:45.39. Hanson also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:51.33.
Matt Stewart finished first in the 200-yard butterfly with a very fast time of 1:55.92. Stewart just missed provisionally qualifying for the national meet in his first performance of the season.
Scott Hagemeyer won both the 100-yard backstroke (54.83) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.93).
Other first place finishers for the Gusties included Josh Waylander in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.85), and Brian Amundson in the 50-yard freestyle (21.80).
The Gustie men defeated MSU, Mankato for the eighth time in the last nine years.
Gustavus Women’s Swimming Highlights
Carrie Gunderson was a double-winner for the Gusties as she claimed top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.16) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.39).
Sarah Koepp was also a double-winner as she finished first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.18) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.27).
Erica Hickey also picked up a first place finish for the Gusties as she won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:02.73.
The MSU, Mankato women defeated Gustavus for the third consecutive year.
