The Gustavus Adolphus women’s soccer team opened the month of October with a 2-1 road nonconference win over Luther Sunday in Decorah, Iowa. The Gusties, who improve to 4-5-2 overall, were led by senior Amy Larson (Bloomington, Minn.), who provided a goal and an assist, and Jenna Iaizzo (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), who added a goal.
Following a scoreless first half, Gustavus got on the board quickly in the second half as Iaizzo scored her second goal in as many days in the 49th minute off an assist from Larson. Larson extended the Gustavus lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute putting a shot past Norse goalkeeper Lilly Steinberg off an assist from Ashley Voigtlander (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.).
The Norse avoided the shutout with a goal in the game’s final 30 seconds as Lisa Torgerson put a ball past Gustavus keeper Kelsey Dietz (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) for her first collegiate goal. Laura Heidt assisted on the goal.
Statistically, Gustavus had a slight margin in total shots (19-11) and corner kicks (5-2) over Luther. Dietz stopped four of five Norse shots on goal to get the win. Steinberg made eight saves for the Norse.
The Gusties are off until Saturday when they host Macalester.
