The Gustavus men’s soccer team used a goal by Dan Suchy (Sr., La Crosse, Wis.) in the first half and a goal by Mike Butterworth (Katy, Texas) in the second half to defeat St. Mary’s University 2-1 in St. Peter on Tuesday afternoon. Suchy’s goal came in the 13th minute with an assist from Jeffrey Johnson (Jr., Tonka Bay, Minn.), while Butterworth’s goal in the 67th minute was unassisted. The Cardinals tallied a goal in the 75th minute to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Gusties held on for the win. Gustavus is now 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the MIAC, while St. Mary’s falls to 3-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the MIAC.

The Gusties were able to control play for much of the match, however they were only able find the net on two of their 29 shots. Jon Szafranski made eight saves in the nets for St. Mary’s. The Cardinals recorded nine shots and Gustavus goaltender Trevor Brown (Jr., Madison, Wis.) made three saves for the Gusties.

In addition to the 29-9 advantage in shots, the Gusties 15 corner kicks to four for the Cardinals.

Gustavus will now prepare for two matches on the road this weekend. On Saturday, the Gusties will face St. Olaf in Northfield at 1:00 pm and then on Sunday the squad will face Luther at 5:00 pm in Decorah, Iowa.
