The Gustavus volleyball team compiled a record of 3-1 at the Pikes Peak Invitational played at Colorado College in Colorado Springs this past weekend. The Gusties defeated Endicott College twice on Saturday to claim the third place finish. Andrea Kron (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) and Emily Klein (So., Red Wing, Minn.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Gusties opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Endicott (30-14, 30-23, 30-12). Outside hitter Andrea Kron and setter Bridget Burtzel turned in top performances for Gustavus as Kron recorded 18 kills and a .556 attack percentage, while Burtzel compiled 41 set assists.
Coach Kari Eckheart’s squad finished round robin play with a 3-1 mark, while host Colorado College and St. Olaf also posted 3-1 marks. The tiebreaker used to advance to the championship match was game record in the three round robin matches. Colorado College and St. Olaf finished at 7-4, while Gustavus finished at 6-4 so the Gusties were bumped into the third place match against Endicott.
In the third place match, the Gusties lost the first game to Endicott 30-19, but then rallied to win the next three games 30-16, 30-17, 30-22 to claim the match and the consolation title. Kron led the attack with 17 kills, followed by Jennifer Thelemann (Jr., LeSueur, Minn.) with 16, and Becca Thompson (Mankato, Minn.) with 12. Rachelle Jakobs (Montevideo, Minn.) contributed 25 set assists and Bridget Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn.) recorded 22 set assists. Emily Klein picked up 20 digs.
The Gusties will travel to Northwestern College in Roseville on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Game time is 7:00 pm.
