The Gustavus men’s soccer team finished its early season road trip with a 2-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Whitewater. Senior forward Alex Groth scored the game-winning goal for the Gusties in the 70th minute. Tyler Garry was the winning goalkeeper.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. UW-Whitewater held a 5-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, junior midfielder J.T. Johnson (Jr., Tonka Bay, Minn.) took a pass from Gabe Joyes (Jr., Stoughton, Wis.) and beat two Warhawk defenders before beating goalkeeper E.J. Sesselman (Jr., Green Bay, Wis.) to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead at the 58 minute mark.
Four minutes later, Alex Groth (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) found the back of the net once again giving the Gusties a 2-0 lead.
UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 2-1 when Kyle Bast (So., Hartland, Wis.) scored off a free-kick with seven minutes left in the match (83:00).
Gustavus goalkeeper Tyler Garry (Sr., Sioux Falls, So. Dak.) recorded 8 saves and picked up the win in the nets.
The Gusties will now face Simpson College in their home opener next Saturday, Sept. 9 at 3:30 pm.
