Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Director Al Molde and Head Football Coach Jay Schoenebeck have selected Brian Bergstrom as the defensive coordinator for the Golden Gustie football program. Bergstrom replaces Lance Taylor who resigned in May.

Bergstrom, a three-time all-conference linebacker for the Gusties from 1998 to 2001, returns to his alma mater after serving as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Crown College last season. Prior to that, Bergstrom, a native of Burnsville, Minn., was a graduate assistant coach working with the linebackers at St. Cloud State University from 2003 until 2005.

While at Gustavus, Bergstrom was a four-year starter at middle linebacker. He graduated as the program’s all-time leading tackler with 406 stops. He also set the school record for tackles in a season with 136 in 1999. In 2000, Bergstrom was a First Team Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-America selection, a First Team Football Gazette All-West Region selection, as well as earning honorable mention All-America honors on the Hewlet-Packard Division III All-America team. In addition to excelling on the football field, Bergstrom also was a standout in the classroom graduating in the top two percent of his class with a 3.92 grade point average in May of 2002. He was also a two-time First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection (2000, 2001).

Bergstrom, who lives in Waconia, Minn. with his wife Kate, will begin his new duties immediately.
