The Gustavus men’s tennis team defeated Coe College 7-0 in the first round of NCAA tournament play on Saturday morning at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Gusties will now play host Carthage on Sunday with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Team Quarterfinals in Fredericksburg, Va. on May 17.
The Gusties opened the match by winning all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Chris Paasch and Sam Zerbib of Coe 8-0 at the #1 position. Roy Bryan and Adam Bryan followed with a 8-0 win over Ryan Yao and Jake Michael at the #2 position. Loren Collins and Jesse Brauer completed the doubles sweep with a 8-2 win over T.J. Leicht and Joey Lankelma at the #3 position.
Gustavus finished the day by winning all six singles matches without dropping a set. Loren Collins defeated Ryan Yao 6-2, 6-3 at #1 and then Adam Morgan defeated Chris Paasch 6-2, 6-1 at the #2 position. Jesse Brauer pushed the score to 4-0 when he defeated Chad Evans 6-0, 6-0 at the #3 spot. The Gusties completed the sweep with Andy Bryan defeating T.J. Leicht 6-0, 6-4 at #4, Roy Bryan defeating Jake Michael 6-0, 6-1 at #5, and Brett Morse-Karzen defeating Joey Lankelma 6-1, 6-3 at #6.
Gustavus improves to 32-4 overall and 24-0 against Division III opponents this season. The Gusties will now face host Carthage College on Sunday at noon with the winner advancing to the NCAA Team Tournament quarterfinals. Carthage (24-4) defeated Kenyon 4-1 to advance to face the Gusties on Sunday.
