Women’s Tennis Downs St. Olaf 9-0

The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team closed out its 15th consecutive spotless MIAC schedule Wednesday with a 9-0 win over St. Olaf in Northfield. The Gusties, now 24-4 overall and rated seventh in the nation, will host the 2006 MIAC Championships this weekend.

The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team closed out its 15th consecutive spotless MIAC schedule Wednesday with a 9-0 win over St. Olaf in Northfield. The Gusties, now 24-4 overall and rated seventh in the nation, will host the 2006 MIAC Championships this weekend.

The Gusties won all nine matches and did not drop a set in singles competition. Tara Houlihan (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Lyndsey Palen (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) did not lose a game between them, teaming to defeat Emily Eggert and Kristina Poplavska 8-0 at No. 1 doublles before recording identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Jaime Gaard (Jr., Edina, Minn.), Marla Menne (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), Hannah Frericks (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) and Darcy Haubrick (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) also posted a singles and a doubles win for the Gusties.

Both teams will open MIAC Tournament play Friday afternoon with top-seeded Gustavus facing either eighth-seeded Saint Mary’s or ninth-seeded Bethel in a quarterfinal match. Fifth-seeded St. Olaf will face fourth-seeded St. Thomas in another quarterfinal.
