The Gustavus women’s tennis team closed out its Spring Break trip to Virginia with a 6-3 victory over eighth-rated Williams College Wednesday. The fourth-rated Gusties forged an early 3-0 lead by sweeping the Ephs in doubles play. The teams then split 3-3 in singles play.
Tara Houlihan (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) at #1 doubles and #2 singles and Marla Menne (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) at #2 doubles and #5 singles were the only double-winners for the Gusties.
Lyndsey Palen (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) teamed with Houlihan for an 8-2 decision at #1 doubles, but was upended by Cary Gibson at #3 singles 6-4, 6-3. Jenni White (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) teamed with Menne for an 8-2 win at #2 doubles and took the first set of her #6 singles match, 6-2, but could not hold on for the victory over Anne Schneidman. Schneidman took the second and third sets by identical 6-4 scores.
The Gustavus pair of Darcy Haubrick (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) and Hannah Frericks (Jr, Sartell, Minn.) captured the third doubles victory, 8-4, over Annie Hancock and Allison Rottkamp. Jaime Gaard (Jr., Edina, Minn.) also posted a 7-5, 7-5 win over Hancock at #4 singles.
