The Gustavus women’s tennis team swept a pair of duals from Division II North Central Conference schools University of North Dakota 8-1 and University of Nebraska-Omaha 7-2 Friday night at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties improve to 2-1 on the season and will face both schools again Saturday.
The Gusties had five double-winners against the Fighting Sioux as Tara Houlihan, Lyndsey Palen, Hannah Frericks, Darcy Haubrick and Jenny Arnfelt each won their singles and doubles matches. The only North Dakota win came at #6 singles where UND’s Christa Hall defeated Gustavus’ Alex Burleigh 7-6, 4-6, 10-8. Burleigh had earlier teamed with Arnfelt to pick up a win at #3 doubles.
Lauren Hom, Marla Menne, Jaime Gaard and Jenni White each picked up a singles and a doubles win against Nebraska-Omaha. Laura Arnebeck picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at #5 singles, but fell to UNO’s Maggie Russell and Kylie Roe 8-4 at #3 doubles with teammate Jill Bailey. The other UNO victory came at #6 singles where Kelsey Cochran turned back Gustie first-year Erica Dobson 1-6, 7-6, 13-11.
The Gusties improve to 2-1 on the season and will face both schools again Saturday afternoon. UNO (1-1)and UND (3-1) will kick off the day with a North Central Conference tilt at 9 am at the Swanson Tennis Center.
