Men’s Hockey Wins 7-1 Over Concordia

The Gustavus men’s hockey team scored early and often Saturday in a 7-1 win over Concordia in St. Peter at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Senior Keith Detlefsen (Lakeville, Minn.) tallied one goal and three assists to lead the Gusties. Gustavus is now 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team scored early and often Saturday in a 7-1 win over Concordia in St. Peter at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Senior Keith Detlefsen (Lakeville, Minn) tallied one goal and three assists and senior Loren Havemeier (Sleepy Eye, Minn.) recorded one goal and two assists to lead the Gusties. After back-to-back wins over the Cobbers on Friday (7-0) and Saturday, the Gusties improve to 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC. Concordia drops to 5-5-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league play.

Gustavus got off to a quick start in the opening period with a goal from senior defenseman Keith Detlefsen at the 3:47 mark. Tim Ornell (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Ben Ollila (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) were credited with assists. The Gusties added to their early lead with a powerplay goal by Havemeier at the 8:02 mark of the first period. Jon Keseley (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) tallied the third goal of the period for Gustavus at the 10:34 mark to give the Gusties a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Gustavus outshot Concordia 18-2 in the period.

Eight minutes into the second period, the Gusties had a quality scoring opportunity on an odd-man rush. However, Concordia goaltender Mike Dowers turned away Gustavus’ shot with an impressive sliding save. The Gusties recorded the first goal of the second period at the 13:34 mark on a shorthanded goal by senior Steve Dusich (Apple Valley, Minn.). Detlefsen and Steven Jensen (Jr., Kentwood, Mich.) contributed with the assists. Gustavus scored two more goals in the period 23 seconds apart. Ollila netted a goal at the 15:08 mark, while teammate Sami Idris (So., Gothenburg, Sweden) put a shot past Dowers at 15:31. Gustavus took a 6-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Gusties added one more goal by freshman Jake Barke (Roseville, Minn.) in the third period at the 15:46 mark to extend their lead to 7-0. However, Aaron Bruggeman ruined the shutout with the Cobbers’ only goal of the game at the 17:43 mark. Assists were credited to Mike Vlasak and Brett Johnson.

Detlefsen tallied one goal and three assists and Havemeier recorded one goal and two assists, while Keseley and Ollila each tacked on one goal and one assist. Dusich and Ornell also contributed two assists apiece. Keseley has scored at least one point in every game this season.

Senior Erik Kraska (Plymouth, Minn.) recorded the win between the pipes for Gustavus making 11 saves in two periods to boost his season record to 4-1-0. Freshman Kevin Johnson (Wayzata, Minn.) made his collegiate debut for the Gusties, picking up three saves in the third period.

Gustavus outshot Concordia 44-15 in the game and converted 2-of-11 powerplays, while the Cobbers went 1-for-8 with an extra skater. Gustavus outscored the Cobbers 14-1 during the weekend en route to recording the MIAC sweep.

Gustavus improves to 71-21-4 all-time against Concordia and are 8-2-2 against the Cobbers under Head Coach Brett Petersen.

Gustavus will be back in action on Friday (12/9) at home against Hamline at 7:05 p.m. before traveling to St. Paul on Saturday (12/10) to complete the season series.
