Women’s Swimming and Diving Falls to Minnesota State in Opener

The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team picked up only three wins in 16 events on Saturday, falling to Minnesota State University, Mankato, 170-130, in a season-opening dual Saturday at the Lund Natatorium in St. Peter. Ashley Baer won the 1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 backstroke to lead the Mavericks.

The Gustavus 200 freestyle relay team of junior Laura Watkins (Fargo, N.D.) and first-years Krista Koenen (Willmar, Minn.), Emily Degnan (Hibbing, Minn.) and Emily Amundsen (Plymouth, Minn.) picked up a win in a time of 1:42.82, defeating the rest of the field by just under four seconds. With a win later in the 50 freestyle, Watkins became the only double winner on the day for the Gusties. Watkins also finished second in the 200 medley relay, teaming with senior Katherine Haynes (Duluth, Minn.), first-year Erica Hickey (Great Falls, Mont.) and sophomore Sara Pfau (Bismark, N.D.) to post a 1:56.42 clocking.

Junior Yoshi Ludwig (St. Peter, Minn.) picked up the other Gustie win, taking the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01.39. Ludwig also finished second in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:21.06.

The Gusties will return to the pool next Friday with a dual against MIAC rival St. Olaf.
