Volleyball Sweeps Hamline in MIAC Opener

Gustavus handed Hamline a 30-20, 30-23, 30-19 loss in both team’s MIAC opener held Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

The Gusties (6-3, 1-0 in the MIAC) jumped on the Pipers (6-4, 0-1) early in game one. Gustavus took an 8-3 lead after a Bri Alsides ace, but the Pipers fought back with three straight Shelby Hyllengren kills to make the score 9-7.

Gustie outside hitter Jessica Plemel talled four of her 10 kills in the first game, including two in a four-point run that gave the Gusties a 24-14 advantage.

The Pipers took an 11-10 lead in game two, but Plemel added two nore kills in another four-point spurt to give Gustavus a 14-11 lead. The Pipers got no closer than three the rest of the way.

Gustavus took an 11-2 lead in game three and went on for a 30-19 win.

Junior Heather Rich and sophomore Shelby Hyllengren each had 11 kills for the Pipers while junior Dana Luiken had nine. Hamline was held to a .084 hitting percentage for the night.

Andrea Kron led the Gusties with 13 kills while Plemel had 10. Jennifer Thelemann and Jami Moseng each had seven.

Gustavus will face Luther College on Friday at 5 p.m. in Mankato as part of the Bethany Lutheran College Triangular.
