The Gustavus women’s basketball team made 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to pull away for a 57-48 victory over St. Thomas on Monday night. Bri Monahan had 18 points and 12 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Vel Williams recorded a team high 11 points, four assists, four rebounds, and four steals to lead the Tommies. With the win, Gustavus improves to 12-5 overall and 10-4 in the MIAC, while St. Thomas falls to 7-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
Lacy Skoog had 10 of her 13 points in the second half to lead the Gusties to an important road win. The Gusties led 23-18 at the half then went up by as many as 12 off of a three-pointer by Skoog. The game was tied with just under five minutes remaining, but the Gusties made eight free throws and two lay-ups to pull away for a nine point win. Kristin Kachelmyer, playing in her 100th game in her Gustavus career, recorded seven points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game.
The Gusties will try to extend their winning streak to three games on Wednesday, but will face a tough test in facing Carleton College, the team with the best record in the MIAC. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter.
