Men’s Hockey Defeats Saint Mary’s 8-1

The Gustavus men’s hockey team defeated Saint Mary’s 8-1 on Friday night in Winona, Minn. Seven different players scored as the Gusties improved their overall record to 7-9-0 and 4-3-0 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team traveled to Winona, Minn. to play an important conference game against Saint Mary’s University on Friday night. Seven different players scored as Gustavus defeated Saint Mary’s 8-1. The Gusties improved to 7-9-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the MIAC.

Gustavus held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Keith Detlefsen, Gustavus’ leading goalscorer, recorded his tenth goal of the season on the power play at 12:12 of the first period. Jon Keseley and Drew Keller recorded the assists.

In the second period, Gustavus jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Jon Keseley scored at 4:37, Nick Droogsma scored on the power play at 13:05 and Loren Havemeier scored the Gusties’ third power play goal of the game at 14:27.

Just a minute into the third period, Jon Keseley scored his second goal of the night to make it 5-0 in favor of Gustavus. Twenty-two seconds later Craig Johnson added his second goal of the season to give the Gusties a six goal advantage. At 3:11 of the final period, Adam Gill scored Saint Mary’s lone goal of the night to make it 6-1 in favor of Gustavus. Reegan Rehm scored the seventh goal of the night for Gustavus at 4:19 of the third period. Gustavus recorded its final goal of the night 36 seconds later from Trevor Heithoff.

The Gusties held a 40-18 shot advantage and went 3-5 on the power play Friday night. Gustie goaltender Erik Kraska made 17 saves to record his fifth win of the season. Cardinal goaltenders Ryne Ess and Nick Berra combined to make 32 saves in the conference loss.

The Gusties will host the Cardinals Saturday night in St. Peter to complete the weekend series. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05pm.
