Men’s Swimming Places Second at UW-Stevens Point Invitational

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team compiled 819.5 points to place second at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational that took place Friday, January 21 and Saturday, January 22.

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Stevens Point, Wis. to compete in the annual University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Invitational on Friday, January 21 and Saturday, January 22. The Gusties compiled 819.5 points to place second out of seven teams. The host UW-Stevens Point won the invite with a total of 963 points.

Individually, the Gusties were led by Scott Hagemeyer and Will Sutor. Hagemeyer claimed two event titles and placed second in another. The sophomore won the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 54.08. He also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.07 and placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.53.

Will Sutor claimed the 100 butterfly event title with a time of 51.71. Sutor also recorded a second place finish in the 20O IM and a fourth place finish in the 200 butterfly with times of 2:00.42 and 2:00.03, respectively.

In the relays, Gustavus finished in the top five in all five events. The team of Brian Amundson, Ben Hanson, Will Sutor and Scott Hagemeyer won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:10.13. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Will Sutor, Brian Amundson, Evan Christianson and Scott Hagemeyer recorded a time of 1:26.55 to place second. The team of Jeff Pearson, Brad Hammer, Jonah Winter and Scott Hagemeyer placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.51.

The team of Jeff Pearson, Brad Hammer, Will Sutor and Scott Hagemeyer placed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:36.02. The Gusties placed fourth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:13.33, which is the team’s fastest time of the season. The team consisted of Brian Amundson, Ben Hanson, Kent Kramer and Will Sutor.

Gustavus will be back in MIAC dual-meet action next Saturday as they will face Saint John’s University in Collegeville.
