The Gustavus women’s basketball team pulled out a 76-70 win over Hamline University on Saturday afternoon. Sara Boldt led the Gusties in scoring with 18 points. Lacy Skoog notched nine assists in the game and scored all of her 17 points in the second half to lead the Gusties to a win. Jess Vadnais scored 16 points in the game, while Kristin Kachelmyer added 12 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Hamline was led by Laurisa Ewert with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Gusties led for the entire first half, leading by as many as 10, points, but let their six point halftime lead slip away. With ten minutes left to play in the game and the Gusties down by seven, Lacy Skoog drained a three-point basket that would start a 21-7 run over the next six minutes, giving Gustavus a seven point advantage with just over four minutes remaining. The two teams traded free throw shots for the final five and a half minutes of the game, leading to a 76-70 victory. Gustavus’ hot shooting was the difference in the game as the team shot 46.7% from the field and an impressive 53.3% from three-point range.
With the win, the Gusties improve their record to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in the MIAC, while Hamline falls to 5-9 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The next contest for the Gusties will be on Wednesday January 26 in a double-header with the men’s team at Concordia. Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
