The Gustavus men’s soccer team lost to Bethel University 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. Bethel improves to 4-0-1 in the MIAC and 8-3-1 overall, while Gustavus falls to 5-1-1 in the MIAC and 11-1-1 overall.
The lone goal came in the 32nd minute of the match by Reed Thunstrom. Joe Hartwell went to the clear the ball just outside of his own penalty area. Thunstrom jumped into the air and blocked the clearance with his foot. The ball landed at his feet with only the goalkeeper to beat. Thunstrom placed a shot into the lower left corner of goal to give Bethel a 1-0 lead.
The Gusties pressed in the second half putting the Royals under a considerable amount of pressure. The Gusties outshot the Royals 7-1 in the second half but forced Bethel goalkeeper to only make two-saves. Gustavus held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks but could not find the back of the net.
Gustavus’ unbeaten streak ended at 29-games with the 1-0 loss on Wednesday. It was the first time the Gusties trailed in a match since November 1, 2002. It is just the second goal scored on the Gusties this season.
Gustavus and St. Olaf are tied for first-place in the MIAC with 11-points. Gustavus will travel to St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, October 16 to play conference opponent Hamline University.
