The Gustavus baseball team continued to struggle in close games dropping two nailbiters to Concordia by the scores of 6-4 and 8-7. The Gusties fall to 13-8 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.
In game one, the Gusties battled the Cobbers to a 4-4 tie through six-and-a-half innings, but Concordia won the game with a two-out, walk-off home run by pinch-hitter Fred Weiss. Trent Larson, Tony Konicek and Ash Larsen each drove in a run for Gustavus. Josh Spitzack, who threw six-and-two-thirds innings, suffered the loss on the mound.
In game two, the Gusties got off to a slow start and trailed 6-0 after three innings. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad got back in the game with a five-run fourth, but the Cobbers held on for the 8-7 victory. Gustavus out-hit Concordia 11-5, however three Gustie errors led to three unearned runs for the Cobbers. Trent Larson, Ben Sherer and Aaron Madson each picked up two hits for Gustavus, while Tyler Vrieze hit a three-run home run to key the five run fourth inning. Trent Larson, who allowed five earned runs in four-and-two-thirds innings, was handed the loss on the mound.
