The Gustavus Adolphus softball team dropped its opening two games against Texas Lutheran 5-2 and 5-4 on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas. The teams played at Trinity University due to poor field conditions at Texas Lutheran.
The international tie-breaker rule was put into affect in the first game against Texas Lutheran. The Gusties went up 2-1 in the top of the eigth inning in the first game. Abby Berstein scored the go ahead run off a Kuntz sacrifice fly ball. However, the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the eighth equalizing on a Gustie error. Kelly Jozwiak hit a three run homerun to win the game for the Bulldogs 5-2.
The Gusties lost another heartbreaker in the second game of the double header later that afternoon. The Gusties put three runs on the board in the third inning. Abby Berstein and Audrey Lenoch led off the third inning with singles and Molly Biehn was walked to load the bases with no outs. Sara Medved cleared the bases with a double and put the Gusties into the lead. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lenoch led off the fifth inning for the Gusties with a double and would score to make it 4-2 in favor of the Gusties.
Texas Lutheran scored two unearned runs off of Gustie errors to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the six inning. Amy Behlen singled and brought in Crystal Carvajal for the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
