Women’s Basketball Defeats St. Thomas 75-69

The Gustavus women’s basketball team stayed undefeated in MIAC play with a hard-fought 75-69 win over St. Thomas in St. Paul on Wednesday night. Angie Peterson led the Gusties with 25 points.

Senior guard Angie Peterson made 10-of-10 at the foul line in the second half and scored a game-high 25 points Wednesday night to lead Gustavus to a 75-69 win over host St. Thomas in MIAC women’s basketball action at St. Paul’s Schoenecker Arena.

The 14th-ranked Gusties (9-1 overall, 7-0 MIAC) never led by more than seven but made 24-of-28 at the foul line to hold off the Tommies (4-6, 3-4).

For St. Thomas, soph Erica Opdahl had 17 points and eight rebounds; junior Kristi Huegel had 15 points; freshman Nikki Zappa added 13 points and eight rebounds; and junior Katie Wiberg had 10 points and four assists. the Toms also sank 24-of-28 at the line and outrebounded the Gusties 35-33.

Gustavus senior Laura Haugen scored 21 points off the bench and junior Kristin Kachelmyer added 10 points and six rebounds.

The Tommies trailed 36-34 at halftime but used a 10-2 run to take a 44-42 lead with 16:05 left.

Haugen hit two 3-point baskets, the second with 13:21 left, for a 51-48 lead and the Gusties never trailed again.

Huegel made two free throws with 1:10 to go to pull the Toms within 71-68, but Haugen and senior guard Kate Sandvig each made two free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the win.
