Men’s Hockey Skates to 4-4 Tie with Amherst

The Gustavus men’s hockey team rallied from three goals down in the third period to tie 13th ranked Amherst 4-4 at Don Roberts Rink in Saint Peter on Sunday evening. Steven Jensen scored the game-tying goal with :30 seconds left in regulation play.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team scored two goals in the final two minutes of the third period to tie Amherst 4-4 in regulation play and send the game to overtime. Gustavus outshot Amherst 6-3 in the extra session, but neither team could tally the game-winner. The Gusties record moves to 5-5-1 on the season, while the 13th ranked Lord Jeffs move to 6-1-1.

Amherst jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Sean Ellis (powerplay, 13:21) and Marc Russell (shorthanded, 18:08). Amherst outshot Gustavus 7-6 in the first period.

The Lord Jeffs extended their lead to 3-1 on a goal by Steve Nelson (powerplay, 3:59) early in the second period. The Gusties cut the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Craig Jankowski (even strength, 8:26). Gustavus outshot Amherst 9-8 in the second period.

Amherst increased its lead to 4-1 on a goal by Roy Mabrey (even strength, 4:49) in the first five minutes of the third period. Gustavus began its comeback on a goal by Jason Watters (even strength, 6:48) which cut the lead to 4-2. Watters scored his second goal of the game at the 18:30 mark to pull the Gusties within one goal at 4-3. Gustavus kept the pressure on the Lord Jeffs until Steve Jensen knocked the game-tying goal into the nets at the 19:30 mark. Gustavus outshot Amherst 16-3 in the third period.

Gustie netminder Dan Melde recorded 16 saves, while Lord Jeffs goaltender Josh Fillman turned away 33 shots. Gustavus held a 37-20 advantage in shots in the 65 minute game. The Gusties were whistled for six penalties for 15 minutes, while Amherst was whistled for six penalties for 20 minutes. Gustavus was 0-for-5 on the powerplay. Amherst was 2-for-six with the man-advantage.
