The Gustavus women’s soccer team tallied a 8-0 win over Bethel in St. Peter on Tuesday. Samantha Engh’s four-goal performance guided the Gusties to their most lop-sided win since the final game of the 2002 season.
Engh, who had scored three goals in the team’s first 11 games of the season, scored two goals in each half. She registered the game-winner six and a half minutes into the game off of a pass from Amy Larson. Her second goal gave Gustavus a 5-0 halftime advantage. Engh finished off the Gustie scoring with the final two goals of the game in the 71st and 83rd minutes.
Gustavus dominated the entire game, outshooting Bethel 31-2. Lindsay LaVoie recorded the shutout in goal while making two saves.
Birabwa Mutebi, Heather Pecosky, Jackie Lehman, and Amy Larson all added one goal apiece for the Gusties. Pecosky, Mutebi, Larson, Kelly Keith, Ashlie Thomas, and Liz Petersen all had one assist.
The last time Gustavus scored eight goals in a game was the 2002 season finale against Hamline. The Gusties avenged last season’s 1-0 road loss at Bethel with today’s eight-goal victory.
Gustavus now leads the all-time series with Bethel 10-1. The Gusties return to action Saturday, October 18 at Hamline. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
