Day One Completed at Women’s ITA Midwest Regional

The first three rounds of the singles competition at the Women’s ITA Midwest Regional were completed on Friday.

The first three rounds of the singles competition at the Women’s ITA Midwest Regional were completed on Friday. Due to rain, the doubles competition was postponed and will begin on Saturday.
Five of the top six seeds in the singles draw advanced to the quarterfinal round, which will be played on Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 am. Top-seeded Sarah Russell of Carleton cruised to three straight sets victories to advance to the round of eight. The only top six seeded player to be upset on the day was third seeded Jaime Gaard of Gustavus. Gaard was defeated in the third round by Wheaton’s Elzabeth Maclellan. Other players advancing to the singles quartefinals include second seeded Lauren Hom (Gustavus), fourth seeded Lyndsey Palen (Gustavus), fifth seeded Christin Tiegs (St. Benedict), sixth seeded Kelly Mikkila (Carthage), and unseeded Marla Menne (Gustavus) and Amanda Santa Romana (Carleton).

The 32 doubles teams in the bracket will begin play at the completion of the singles quarterfinal round on Saturday. Three rounds of doubles will be played to determine Sunday’s semifinalists. The semifnals and finals of both the singles and doubles tournament will be completed on Sunday. Play will be held at the Brown Tennis Courts, Gibbs Tennis Courts, St. Peter High School Tennis Courts, and Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

The Midwest Fall Invite was also restricted to singles play on Friday. The first two rounds were completed with doubles play postponed until Saturday.
