Gustavus sophomore safety Hamada Omar (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) has been named Defensive Player of the Week for his play against the University of St. Thomas last Saturday. Omar compiled nine tackles (four solo stops), recorded one pass breakup, forced a fumble, and intercepted a pass to help the Gusties claim a 30-14 win over the Tommies.

Midway through the third quarter, Omar intercepted a David Sauer pass at the St. Thomas 49-yard line that Gustavus converted into a touchdown five plays later giving the Gusties a 21-0 lead. Early in the fourth quarter with St. Thomas driving deep in Gustavus territory, Omar hit Tommie wide receiver Sam Moen forcing a fumble at the Gustie 13-yard line that Gustavus linebacker Jared Sieling recovered. Omar led a Gustavus defense that forced six St. Thomas turnovers and limited the Tommies to 45 yards rushing in the game.

The Gusties are now 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAC.
