TUCSON, Ariz. – The Gustavus baseball team played its final two games of the Tucson invite on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Kalamazoo in the first game and a 7-4 loss in the closer. The Gusties come home with an 8-1 record on the week and an 11-3 mark on the season.

Gustavus 4, Kalamazoo 2

Ethan Mocchi (Sr., Champlin) got the day started for Gustavus with an RBI double before a Drake Siens (So., Rogers) RBI ground out. Mocchi tacked on another with a dropped strikeout for a 3-0 early edge.

The Hornets responded with a run of their own before ending the first inning.

Christian Johnson (Sr., Buffalo) stayed solid, escaping a jam after two innings of play.

Kalamazoo put the pressure on in the third, adding on another run before a Siens double scored Mocchi in the fifth for the fourth Gustie run.

Damon Rademacher (Sr., Princeton) provided relief, stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.

Neither team was able to get anything going in the sixth as Gavin Baker (Jr., Lakeville) closed things up on the mound after seven innings in the 4-2 final.

Kalamazoo 7, Gustavus 4

Gustavus fired first in game two, scoring off of an error and sac fly. Kalamazoo evened the score in the top of the second before Jonah Pellegrom (Fy., Eagan) and Bryce Novak (Jr., Cleveland) retaliated with RBI singles.

Kalamazoo brought the score to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning where it remained until the sixth.

The Hornets started off the sixth inning tying the score up before plating three more to take over the game.

Despite the Gusties efforts, they could not answer back and would have to settle for the doubleheader split before heading home.

The Gusties are back in action on Friday where they will host Crown college with a 1:00 first pitch.
