Men’s Soccer Secures MIAC Playoff Berth With 2-0 Shutout Over Concordia

The Gustavus men’s soccer team secured a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over Concordia College. The Gusties improved to 6-8-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the MIAC, reaching 16 points in the league standings to secure a playoff berth – their 11th appearance in the 14-year history of the MIAC Playoffs.

Men’s Soccer Hosts Concordia Today On Senior Day

After more than a week off, the Gustavus men’s soccer team is set to host its final regular season game at the Gustie Soccer Field today as it takes on Concordia College at 3:30 p.m. The Gusties are tied for fifth place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 4-3-1 league record (5-8-1 overall), while the Cobbers are in last place at 1-8 in the conference and 6-9-1 overall.

Hannah Sturtz Named MIAC Women’s Soccer Athlete Of The Week

Junior forward Hannah Sturtz played a key part in Gustavus' two victories last week as she registered one goal and two assists for a big four-point week. Sturtz tallied the game-winning assist in a 2-1 win over UW-Stout, and then followed that performance with a goal and assist in a 4-2 victory at St. Catherine. Her assist against the Wildcats set up the game winning goal in the 70th minute, and her goal in the 77th minute – a kick to the high corner over the goalkeeper – provided some insurance in a key MIAC victory. Gustavus improved to 9-5-2 overall and 5-4 in the MIAC with the two big wins.

Brittany Luethmers Named MIAC Volleyball Libero Of The Week

Gustavus sophomore defensive specialist Brittany Luethmers (Prior Lake, Minn.) has been a constant on the back line for the Gusties all season long, and that trend continued last week. The sophomore libero averaged 4.86 digs per set (68 total digs) in three matches, while reaching the 1,000-dig mark in her young career with 27 digs in a five-set, come-from-behind victory over Concordia (3-2). She also had 25 digs and 11 assists in a 3-2 win over Buena Vista and 16 digs in a 3-1 MIAC win over Saint Benedict. Luethmers is just the eighth Gustie to record 1,000 digs, and isn't even to the halfway point of her college career.

After dropping the first two sets Friday night, the Gustavus volleyball team dug deep and rallied for an impressive five-set victory over Concordia College. The Gusties posted a convincing 15-3 win in the fifth set, marking the program's largest margin of victory in the fifth game since rally point scoring debuted in 2001. The win propels the Gusties to 19-6 overall and 7-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Cobbers fall to 8-15 overall and 4-4 in the league.
