Eau Claire, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team finished second in the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational at Eau Claire Country Club on Monday afternoon.  Senior Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.) highlighted the weekend for the Gusties with his first tournament win of the season.  Gustavus will host the Twin Cities Classic next Saturday through Monday at Elk River Golf Club, the Links at North Fork, and Wayzata Country Club, respectively.

Entering Monday’s final round, the Gusties were just two strokes off of the lead after shooting a 22-over-par 306 in Sunday’s first round.  Gustavus was able to gain ground in round two, but fell one stroke shy, and finished in second place behind Luther.  The Gusties mounted a 313 (+29) in the final round to total 619 (+51) for the weekend.  Luther used a 304 (+20) in the first round, and a 314 (+30) in the final round to win the tournament with a 618 (+50).  The Gusties finished as the top Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) team in a 15-team field that featured seven conference squads.

Senior Alex Kolquist led the charge throughout the weekend.  The captain from Hermantown, Minn. started strong on Sunday with a two-over-par 73 to place him in a tie for second headed to the final round on Monday.  He continued his strong play in round two with a one-over-par 72 to total 145 (+3) on the weekend.  Kolquist’s 72 marked the low round on the day, as he pulled away with a five-stroke victory.

“Alex played great,” said head coach Scott Moe of Kolquist’s play.  “He really stepped up this weekend, which was good to see because he is one of our senior leaders.”
