Le Sueur, Minn. – Over 140 alumni, family, and friends of the Gustavus Adolphus football team ascended on the Le Sueur Country Club to take part in the 22nd Annual Golden Gustie Alumni Golf Tournament on Friday afternoon.
“This is an awesome time and it was a great day,” said Head Coach Peter Haugen. “There are so many people that care about Gustavus and the football program, and it’s awesome to see them out here having fun on a beautiful day, at a beautiful course.”
This year’s participants were treated to a four-man scramble style tournament, lunch, swag bag, and dinner following 18 holes of golf.
“The Gustie Football Alumni Golf Tournament is our main fundraiser of the year. Without it, there is no way we could run our program at such a top notch level,” said Haugen. “We are truly thankful for all those former players who are able to come out and join us. Guys like Richard Olson, who is a huge part of gaining hole sponsorships, also make this tournament something special.”
The tournament featured 35 hole sponsorships and over $10,000 worth of raffle prizes and live auction items.
To go along with former players who wore the winged helmet during their college careers, current Gustavus football players had an opportunity to meet a few of their predecessors.
“We wanted our current players to have to have a chance to meet some alumni and make a few connections with the ones who support them,” commented Haugen. “It’s a human connection they are making and that makes it all worth while.”
The Gustavus football team will report to campus on Saturday, Aug. 18 to begin fall camp. The Gusties will open their 2012 campaign on the road against Simpson College on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
“We are just two weeks away from the start of camp, and from walking around from hole to hole, it’s apparent that everyone is ready for Gustie football to get going. This alumni base is engaged and that’s exciting to see,” concluded Haugen.
