Women’s Swimming & Diving Tallies 1,333 Points To Win Invite On Saturday Posted on November 20th, 2011 by

The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team earned a total of 1,333 points on the way to a win in its own invitational on Saturday afternoon in the Lund Natatorium.  Saint Benedict finished second at the meet with 1,072 points, while MSU, Mankato rounded out the competitors in third with 731 points.

The Gusties tallied eight event wins and 15 finishes inside the top-three on the afternoon.

Leading the Gustie swimmers was Kelsey Lucia and Jennifer Strom.  Lucia registered a pair of wins in the freestyle sprints by taking the 50 free in 24.94 and the 100 free in 55.16.  Strom dominated the breaststroke with by touching the wall first in the 100 with a time of 1:08.01 and 200 with a time of 2:33.06.

Alissa Tinklenberg turned in three top-two marks at the invite.  Tinklenberg swam a 10:57.02 to win the 1000 freestyle by over :10 seconds.  She also added a pair of runner-up finishes in the individual medley events, turning in a time of 2:17.28 in the 200 IM and a time of 4:49.08 in the 400 IM.

Rounding out Gustavus’ top individual swimmers at the meet was Katie Olson and Michaela Holm.  Olson swam to a second place finish in the 50 free after touching the wall in 25.28, and Olson placed third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:41.31.

The 200-medley relay team comprised of Tinklenberg, Strom, McKenna Jones, and Lucia turned in Gustavus’ lone win in the relay races by edging an MSU, Mankato group by less than :02 seconds after touching in 1:52.14.

The 200-free relay of Olson, Sophia Iaquinta, Serena Elthon, and Sarah Hund came in second with a time of 1:41.46, while the 400-free relay of Lucia, Hund, Olson, and Tinklenberg also placed second with a time of 3:44.59.

Earlier in the day, diver Heather Funai got Gustavus out to a good start by winning both the one and three-meter diving competitions.  Funai recorded a score of 219.70 on the one-meter and a 208.75 on the three-meter.  Fellow diver Alicia Alvarado rounded out the invite by finishing second on the three-meter after earning a score of 195.85.

The Gustavus swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool on Dec. 2-3, when the Gusties will take part in the two-day Falcon Invite held on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
