Sophomore forward Amanda Cartony (Stillwater, Minn.) scored two goals for the second time this season.

For the second time this season, sophomore forward Amanda Cartony scored two goals for the Gustavus women’s soccer team as the Gusties battled back from an early deficit resulting in a 2-1 victory over St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn. Wednesday afternoon.

The Gusties gave up the game’s first score just :49 into the first period on an unassisted goal by Lensa Gurmessa – her first of the season – but netted the equalizer at the 8:11 mark on an unassisted goal of their own off the foot of Cartony. The sophomore forward then tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 30th minute, which proved to be the game-winner.

After the early goal by the Wildcats, Gustavus keeper Jessica Richert settled in and collected 11 saves, tying a season-high. Richert also leads the MIAC with 113 saves. St. Kate’s fired 21 shots throughout the contest, compared to 12 by the Gusties.

Gustavus strung together consecutive victories for the first time this season after upsetting St. Thomas last Saturday 1-0 in St. Peter. Wednesday’s win moves the Gusties to 5-11-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the MIAC, while the Wildcats dropped their 13th consecutive match to 1-16-0 overall and 0-10-0 in league play.

Head coach Mike Stehlik’s squad will travel back to St. Paul on Saturday for the season finale against Macalester. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
