Tam Meuwissen scored the lone goal for the Gusties Wednesday in St. Paul.
The Gustavus women’s soccer team fell to Hamline 4-1 in MIAC action Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn., marking the first time in program history the Pipers defeated the Gusties on the soccer pitch. Gustavus drops to 3-9-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the MIAC, while Hamline improves to 8-2-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.
The Pipers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Corinne Henning found Aileen Scheibner 30 yards off the far post for the score. The goal was Hamline’s first against the Gusties since Oct. 6, 2007. The Henning-Scheibner connection scored again at the 41:34 mark on a breakaway, which proved to be the game-winner.
After the half, Tam Meuwissen found the back of the Piper net on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute – her first goal of the season – but that would be all the offense the Gusties would provide on the day.
Scheibner completed the hat trick with her third goal of the day at the 75:33 mark, assisted by Nicole Verdoorn on a race to a loose ball. Scheibner now has a league-leading 11 goals this season. Allyse Eide put the game to a 4-1 final with an unassisted goal in the 80th minute.
Liz Stock made seven saves in goal for the Pipers, while her counterpart, Jessica Richert, tallied three saves for Gustavus.
The victory for Hamline ends a 20-game losing streak against Gustavus. The streak included 18 shutouts and a 108-to-5 scoring advantage for the Gusties.
Gustavus will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. on Oct. 15 for a conference match-up against Augsburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
