On a windy Saturday afternoon on the Gustie Soccer Field in St. Peter, Minn., the Gustavus women’s soccer team dropped its second game of the year 1-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. For the second consecutive game the Gusties struggled to put pressure on the opposing defense as they collected a total of five shots (three on goal) against the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point scored the lone goal of the game at the 40:40 mark in the first period. Junior forward Angela Gallow found the back of the Gustie net from the far left wing on an assist from Sarah Vitale.
The Pointers kept Gustie goalkeeper Jessica Richert busy throughout the contest. Richert tallied 11 saves in her second complete game in the net this season. UW-Stevens Point totaled 22 shots during the game.
“We played better today,” Gustavus Head Coach Mike Stehlik said. “We talked about playing with more effort. We did a really good job with that. It’s early in the season, we’re a young team and we’re just trying to figure some stuff out. We’ll tweak some things for sure after what we saw. We’ll come back this week and have a really hard week of training and come back and see what we got next week.”
The Gustie women will travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. next weekend for a match-up against Chapman University on Saturday, Sept. 10 and on Sunday against the University of California-Santa Cruz. Both games will be played at 1:30 p.m.
