Women’s Hockey Scores Early and Often In 5-0 Win At UW-Superior Posted on February 2nd, 2011 by

Lindsey Hjelm scored two early goals to spark the Gusties.

The eighth ranked Gustavus women’s hockey team scored three first period goals and never looked back on its way to a convincing 5-0 win over tenth ranked UW-Superior in Superior on Tuesday night.  Sophomore forward Lindsey Hjelm scored twice to lead the Gusties offensively, while first year goaltenders Katherine Jorgenson and Marah Sobczak combined to post the shutout in the nets.

Hjelm got Gustavus off to a fast start scoring twice in the first eight minutes of the game.  She scored her first goal at the 3:35 mark with an assist from Melissa Doyle and then picked up her second goal four minutes later (8:07) giving the Gusties an early 2-0 lead.  Gracie Olson and Gina DeNucci were credited with assists on the second goal.  Allie Schwab closed out the first period scoring with an unassisted goal at the 10:51 mark.

After a scoreless second period, the Gusties added two more goals in the third period with Alyssa Gaulrapp scoring at the 3:42 mark with an assist from Amanda Cartony and then Cartony tallied the final goal on the power play at the 18:22 mark with assists from Lisa Tuuri and Kirstin  Peterson.

Coach Mike Carroll used two goaltenders in the game as Katherine Jorgenson played the first 32 minutes making 13 saves and then Marah Sobczak entered for the final 28 minutes making seven saves.

The Gusties, who improve to 11-3-12 with the victory, return to conference play this weekend with a home-and-home series with Concordia on Friday and Saturday.  Friday’s game starts at 7:30 pm and Saturday’s game is set to face off at 2:00 pm.
