David PearsonDavid Pearson and David Martinson Named To CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Team

Gustavus Adolphus College senior swimmer and junior hockey player David Martinson have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large Team as released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Pearson, a College Division First Team selection, and Martinson, a College Division Third Team selection, are the third and fourth Gustavus student-athletes to be named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans this year.

Former Gustavus men's hockey coach Don Roberts has been selected to receive the 2009 Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey Award. The award will be presented on May 7 at 317 On Rice Park in St. Paul, Minn. Roberts,who coached the Gusties for 33 seasons, retired in 1997 as the winningest coach in the history of Division III hockey with a record of 532-290-25.

The Gustavus men's hockey team scored the first goal of the game, but fell to Neumann College 4-1 in the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship game on Saturday at Herb Brooks Ice Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. David Martinson tallied his 26th goal of the season at 4:54 in the first period to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead. However, Neumann would go on to score four consecutive goals en route to the win. Gustavus finished its season at 19-11-0.

Patrick Dynan scored two goals including the game-winning goal at 6:31 in overtime to lift the No. 15 Gustavus men's hockey team over No. 2 UW-Stout by a score of 3-2 in the NCAA Semifinals on Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Gusties, who improved their overall mark to 19-10-0, snapped a 15-game unbeaten streak for the Blue Devils. Gustavus advanced to its first ever NCAA Championship game with the victory. Head Coach Brett Petersen's squad will face the winner of Hobart/Neumann on Saturday afternoon.

Gustavus Adolphus junior forward David Martinson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as a 2009 RBK Hockey Division III All-America West First Team honoree at a banquet held Thursday evening in conjunction with this weekend's NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. Martinson was one of five players named to the All-America teams competing in the NCAA Semifinal games.

The 15th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus men's hockey team is preparing for the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship this weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Gusties, who are 18-10-0, will face second-ranked UW-Stout, which is 23-5-2, on Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m. (4 p.m. EST). Fans unable to make the trip to Herb Brooks Arena can watch the NCAA's webcast of the game on a PC computer only at NCAA.com.

Men’s Hockey Defeats UW-Superior 2-0, Advances To NCAA Frozen Four in Lake Placid, New York

The Gustavus men's hockey team defeated UW-Superior 2-0 in a NCAA Quarterfinal game in Superior, Wis. on Saturday night. The Gusties now advance to the NCAA Frozen Four in Lake Placid, New York next Friday and Saturday, March 20-21. Ross-Ring Jarvi scored the gamewinner for Gustavus. Senior Matt Lopes turned in a brilliant performance in the nets making 33 saves The Gusties, who are now 18-10-0, will be playing in the Division III Frozen Four for the first time since 1982.

Tickets On Sale For Men’s Hockey NCAA Quarterfinal Game Against UW-Superior

Pre-sale tickets are now available for the Gustavus men's hockey NCAA Quarterfinal game against on Saturday, March 14 at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $10 regardless of age and can only be purchased with a Visa or Mastercard over the telephone. Individuals interested in purchasing tickets in advance should contact Tami at UW-Superior at 715-395-4693. There is a limit of 250 pre-sale tickets available for Gustie fans.

Senior goaltender Matt LopesMatt Lopes Named MIAC Men’s Hockey Player of the Week

Gustavus Adolphus College senior goaltender Matt Lopes (East Falmouth, Mass./Bishop Stang) has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending March 15, 2009. Lopes made 17 saves in the Gusties' 5-2 win over Hamline in the MIAC Playoff Championship game last Wednesday in St. Peter.
