Volleyball outside hitter Kate Holtan (Jr., Rochester) and football quarterback Michael Veldman (Sr., Becker) have been named Gustavus Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month, which is voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department and presented by Thrivent Financial.

Michael Veldman (Sr., Becker) led the Gustavus football team to a 59-27 win at Augsburg Saturday, tying a school and MIAC record with seven touchdowns in the contest.

The Gustavus football team made it three straight wins Saturday after defeating Augsburg 59-27. Michael Veldman (Sr., Becker) tied Mitch Hendricks school and MIAC record with seven touchdown passes in the contest, while Josh Kirk (Sr., Garvin) tied the program record with four touchdown grabs.

Football Sets School Record With 69 Points in Win Over Hamline

The Gustavus football team put together a strong all-around effort on Saturday to take down Hamline 69-21. The 69-point effort sets the Gustavus football program record for most points in a game. The Gusties scored 69 points against NPI in 1979, however, it went as an exhibition as NPI was not an NCAA institution. With the win the Gusties improve to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC while the Pipers move to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Josh Kirk (Sr., Garvin) hauled in the second most receiving yards in a game in Gustavus football history on Saturday as the team took down Concordia 35-28.

Late Game Heroics Lead to Football’s First Road Win at Concordia Since 2010

Trailing by one with 30 seconds to play and the ball on its own 22 yard line, the odds were stacked against the Gustavus football team. Michael Veldman (Sr., Becker) took a snap and ended up scrambling left from the pocket before unleashing a deep ball on the run that traveled 50 yards in the air and was caught by Josh Kirk (Sr., Garvin) on the left sideline, which he was able to take in for the score.

The Gustavus football team travels to Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday with snow in the forecast to square off against Concordia in a 1 p.m. contest. Gustavus enters the contest 2-2 and 0-2 in the MIAC while the Cobbers are 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Football Drops Late Game Shootout to Bethel 35-33

In a fourth quarter that would see 40 points scored, it would be the two-point margin that Bethel held in the quarter that would prove to be the difference in the Gustavus football team 35-33 loss to the Royals. With the loss, the Gusties fall to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC while Bethel improves to 3-0 and 1-0 in the conference.
