Indianapolis - The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced its 2013 winter sports postgraduate scholarship winners earlier this week. Among the list of 29 male and 29 female winter sports student-athletes was Gustavus senior track and field competitor Allyson Voss (Wausau, Wis.).

“It was such an honor for me to receive a nomination from Gustavus for this award, and I feel very fortunate to have received the scholarship,” said Voss.

Voss explains that since first she stepped foot on campus, athletics played a integral role in her life at Gustavus. “I came in with some big goals and I knew that Gustavus had the coaching staff and environment to help me achieve them,” she said. “But more than that, the lasting friendships and memories that I have created along the way were what got me through the tough times. I know they will stay with me even when I can no longer pole vault.”

Ally Voss clears the bar at the MIAC Championships last spring.

To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative. Created in 1964, NCAA postgraduate scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes.

Voss is the 34th Gustavus student-athlete to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship since football player James Goodwin became the first in 1974. She is also the second postgraduate scholarship winner from Gustavus this school year, as cross country runner Beth Hauer took home the award following her season in the fall.

Because Ally was nominated as a winter sports athlete, her indoor track and field accolades were taken into consideration. Over her four-year collegiate career, Voss participated in the pole vault at 21 indoor track and field competitions. She recorded 16 finishes inside the top three and has collected nine first place finishes.

During her senior season alone, Voss did not finish outside the top two, earning four gold medals out of the six meets she took part in. With a first place performance at the 2013 MIAC Championships, Voss became the first Gustavus track and field athlete to win two MIAC indoor pole vault titles. A three-time All-Conference performer, she placed third (10’ 11.75”) in 2010, and claimed the top spot on the podium in 2012 (11’ 0.75”) and 2013 (12’ 4.5”). Her 12-foot 4.5-inch performance at this year’s indoor MIAC meet broke the meet and school records. Both marks were held by Gustie Janna Castellano and were set in 2007. Castellano’s meet record was 12-feet 2-inches while her school record stood at 12-feet 3.5-inches.

At the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Voss narrowly missed All-America status with a ninth place finish after clearing a height of 12-feet 3.5-inches.

Although her accolades on the track are impressive, so are her accomplishments off the track. In the spring of 2012, Voss received a Critical Language Scholarship to study the language of Urdu in India during the summer of 2012. In late April of her senior year, she was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Grant to Spain for 2013.

After graduation she will head to Spain for nine and a half months to serve as an English Teaching Assistant within a Spanish school.

“I will be teaching English in a high school and have plans to start a running club in my community,” commented Voss on her post-graduation plans. “After a year, I will return to the U.S. and move to Houston where I will be a bilingual education Teach for America Corp member – an opportunity which I am so excited for and very passionate about!”

Voss is the 34th Gustavus student-athlete to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

A double major who will graduate in June with degrees in Spanish and sociology and anthropology, Voss carries an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.94. If her commitment to her studies and being one of the top NCAA Division III pole vaulters wasn’t enough, the Wausau, Wis., product is also a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and is a volunteer through the Big Partner Little Partner program.

“Every day I spend at Gustavus I feel so proud to be a part of this community,” concluded Ally. “I constantly find myself inspired by both staff and students because there are so many unique ideas, interests, passions and conversations floating around. It truly is a place and a community devoted to vocation and engagement in the world.”

Ally Voss’s collegiate athletic career is not done yet, as the Black and Gold’s most decorated pole vaulter will look to cap her four-year tenure on a high note in her native Wisconsin on Thursday. Voss, who is the only Gustavus All-American in the outdoor pole vault, looks to earn All-America status once again the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held his weekend at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wis.

Voss enters the competition ranked eighth in the country with a qualifying height of 12-feet 5.5-inches. She took gold at the MIAC Championships for the second straight year, becoming Gustavus’s first four-time All-Conference performer in the outdoor pole vault. Her performance at the MIAC meet on May 11th bested St. Thomas’s Karoline Bastiaens’s 2003 MIAC meet record of 12-feet 5.25-inches.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes in their final year or intercollegiate athletics competition that excels academically and athletically. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants of $7,500 that can be used for research, books, tuition and other educational expenses at any graduate school.

Josh Owens is no stranger to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as he returns to the national stage for the second straight year. Last season at the NCAA Championships held in Claremont, Calif., Owens went over the bar at 15-feet seven-inches to finish 17th overall.

According to the most recent USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Rankings released on Monday, May 20, Owens sits tied for fourth in the pole vault alongside four other competitors with a qualifying height of 16-feet 1.75-inches. He recorded his season-best height just last week at the UW-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier. Owens, who was the MIAC runner-up in the pole vault the previous two seasons, claimed the gold medal at the 2013 MIAC Championships. The three-time All-Conference performer cleared a height of 15-feet 5.5-inches to take first in St. Paul on May 10.

Owens is the first Gustavus pole vaulter to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Josh Gysbers did so in 2003. Gysbers is also Gustavus’s lone All-American in the event, placing seventh the same year with a height of 15-feet seven-inches.

Ally Voss

Allyson Voss is also making her second straight showing at the NCAA Championships. As a junior, Voss made Gustavus track and field history by becoming the program’s first All-American in the outdoor pole vault. Voss placed seventh last year at Claremont with a school-record height of 12-feet 7.5-inches.

The Wausau, Wis. product enters the competition ranked eighth in the country with a height of 12-feet 5.5-inches. At the 2013 MIAC Championships, Voss became the first Gustavus athlete to win the pole vault in back-to-back seasons. The senior did so in record breaking fashion as well, breaking the MIAC meet record with her NCAA qualifying height mentioned earlier. Her mark bested St. Thomas’s Karoline Bastiaens’s 2003 record of 12-feet 5.25-inches. Gustavus’s first four-time All-Conference performer in the pole vault, Voss is the second two-time MIAC Champion from Gustavus. Janna Castellano was the first after winning titles in 2005 and 2007.

The finals for the women’s pole vault will begin on Thursday, May 23 at 2:40 p.m., while the finals for the men’s pole vault will start later that night at 6:10 p.m.

St. Peter, Minn. - Battling the high humidity and unpredictable weather of the Red River Valley, a pair of runners with Gustavus ties made their mark at the ninth annual Fargo Marathon on Saturday.

Nicole Porath, a 2005 Gustavus graduate, crossed the finish line with a time of 2:50:49 in front of a roaring Fargodome crowd to win the women’s marathon.

“I’m not going to lie, the crowd is amazing,” said Porath about her finish. “It’s fabulous, one of the best I ever had. The course was flat and fast, although you had to be careful of some of the corners.”

Earlier in the day, Gustavus cross country and track and field assistant coach Brenden Huber won the men’s 10k race with a time of 33:41.

Huber also praised the finish line crowd, stating after the race that, “It’s my favorite finish of all the road races I do because you come into that tunnel and the crowd just lights up. You get your third and fourth wind. It’s just electric in here when you hit the ramp. It’s a lot of fun.”

On the men’s side, senior Josh Owens (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) turned in a first place finish in the pole vault after going over the bar at 16-feet 1.75-inches. The 2013 MIAC Champion in the pole vault bested his previous season-best mark of 15-feet 5.5-inches set at the Meet of the UnSaintly on May 3 in St. Paul. Owens’s performance on Thursday will most certainly boost his national ranking heading into the NCAA Championships as the senior was ranked 18th heading into the weekend.

Gustavus’s next top finisher was senior Erica Hett (Burnsville, Minn.). Hett crossed the finish line in 11:30.33 to place second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hett’s top time of the season in the steeplechase was an 11:19.22 posted in a runner-up performance at the MIAC Championships last weekend.

Also on the women’s team, Elizabeth Weiers (So., Le Center, Minn.) continued her already stellar outdoor season with a sixth place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 164-feet 10-inches. Weiers, who placed second in the hammer last weekend with a throw of 153-feet 11-inches at the MIAC Championships, improved her season-best mark by more than two feet in La Crosse. Her previous season-best of 162-feet five-inches recorded at the MSU Twilight Meet on April 30 broke April Felt’s 1999 school record throw of 160-feet two-inches. With her toss on Thursday, she once again bested the school record – this time her own. Heading into yesterday, Weiers was ranked 28th in the country with her performance in Mankato.

Elizabeth Weiers
