The Gustavus women’s nordic skiing team turned in another strong weekend of skiing at the Telemark SuperTour race in Cable, Wisconsin. The Gusties finished fourth in the 5k classic race on Saturday and fifth in the 10k freestyle race on Sunday for an overall finish of fourth place (out of 10 teams). Northern Michigan finished first overall with 184 points, followed by Alaska Fairbanks with 167, Michigan Tech with 157, and Gustavus with 119.

In Saturday’s Classic race, Kelly Chaudoin paced the Gusties with a 10th place finish in a time of 19:02. Allison Bohn finished five seconds behind Chaudoin in 12th place (19:07). The Gusties third skier to cross the finish line was Erin Eppler, who placed 22nd in a time of 19:34. The rest of the Gustavus contingent included Danielle Burgmeier finishing 44th (21:08), Cassandra Brady placing 56th (22:30), Jill Manthey finishing 59th (22:34) and Annika Ferber placing 65th (24:26).

In Sunday’s Freestyle race, the Gusties were handed a setback when standout Kelly Chaudoin was unable to finish the race, however the rest of the team responded with inspired performances. Allison Bohn and Erin Eppler crossed the finished at virtually the same time as Bohn placed 16th in a time of 25:33.2 and Eppler placed 17th in 25:33.7. Danielle Burgmeier was the next Gustie to cross the finish line as she placed 38th in a time of 27:48. Following Burgmeier were Cassandra Brady in 43rd (28:37.8), Jill Manthey in 52nd (29:37), and Annika Ferber in 60th (31:30.5).

The Gusties will have next weekend off and then return to action on Feb. 14-15 in Little Falls, Minn.

Gustavus senior Kelly Chaudoin posted an impressive 40th place finish in the 5k freestyle race (16:34) at the U.S. National Cross Country Skiing Championships being held in Anchorage, Alaska. In a field that contained nearly all of the finest amateur skiers in the U.S., Chaudoin’s finish was the fourth highest among skiers from the Central Region to cross the finish line and the second highest among Division III competitors. The Championships, which were scheduled to begin on Saturday and end on Wednesday, were shortened due to severely cold weather in Alaska. Rules stipulate that racing cannot take place when the temperature is below -4 fahrenheit, which forced the cancellation of racing every day but Monday, January 5.

Coach Jed Friedrich stated, “Placing 40th at the US National Championships is pretty impressive considering the very best skiers in the country are competing for spots for this year’s World Championships, Junior World Championships, and even next year’s Olympics. In addition , placing fourth among racers in the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) makes Kelly a very legitimate contender for the NCAA Championships in Rumford, Maine.”

The Gusties will now have a two-week break before competing again at the second NCAA Qualifier event , which will take place in Coleraine, Minn. on January 24-25.

Nordic skiers Laura Edlund, Kathleen DeWahl, and Kelly Chaudoin will participate in the 55th annual NCAA Collegiate Skiing Championships this week, March 5-8, at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Mont. These skiers earned the right to participate in the championships based on point totals earned in eight Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) races throughout the season. Edlund (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and DeWahl finished (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) sixth (145.9) and seventh (155.9), respectively, in the final CCSA point standings. Chaudoin (Jr., Ely, Minn.) finished eleventh with 168.2 points.

Thirty nine skiers will compete in a 5K freestyle race on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. MST and a 15K classic race on Friday at 11:00 a.m. MST. The Gusties are the first Division III institution in the CCSA to qualify the maximum three skiers for the national championships. No other Minnesota institution has a participant in the women’s Nordic skiing competition. Previously, Gustavus had only sent one skier, Chandra Daw in 2006, to the NCAA Championships in school history.

Dartmouth College, one of three teams with a full compliment of 12 skiers, enters as the defending champion. Montana State University, Bozeman, is this year’s host.
