Five Gustavus Adolphus College student athletes have been recognized as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division At-Large Teams. Kimbra Kosak (women’s golf), Melissa Mackley (women’s hockey), David Martinson (men’s hockey) and Dave Pearson (men’s swimming and diving) were named to the first team, while John Kauss (men’s tennis) was honored on the second team.

David Martinson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.), a 2009 First Team All-America honoree, helped the Gusties earn second place in the NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey Championships this season. He led Gustavus in scoring with 26 goals and 15 assists for 41 points, and ranked second in Division III in goals scored at 26. The two-time All-MIAC selection also led the squad with seven power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Martinson, an accounting major, is the son of Phil and Lynn Martinson of St. Louis Park and a 2004 graduate of St. Louis Park High School.

Dave Pearson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) was a key member of men’s swimming and diving teams that won MIAC Championships in 2006 and 2008 and finished second in 2007 and 2009. He was a part of several relay teams including the 800 yard free relay that finished first at the MIAC Championships in both 2008 and 2009 and went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships with a sixth place finish in 2008 and an eighth-place finish in 2009. The 2008 800 free relay team set the conference and school record with a time of 6:44.64. Pearson earned All-MIAC honors by finishing in the top three in an individual event or relay seven times during his career. He was also awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Pearson, a chemistry major, is the son of Scott and Kathleen Pearson of Woodbury and a 2005 graduate of Stillwater Area High School.

He won both singles and doubles titles at last fall’s ITA Midwest Region Championship before winning the ITA Small College Singles Championship and finishing second in the ITA Small College Doubles Championship. As a result, he was selected to represent the United States at the International University Challenge of Tennis held in France. He enters the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships in Claremont, Calif. as the top-seed in both the singles draw and the doubles draw (with Burdakin), which begin Friday, May 22. Kauss, a management major, is the son of Del and Linda Kauss of St. Paul and a 2005 graduate of Harding High School.

Kosak, Mackley, Martinson, and Pearson will now advance to the national ballot. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team will be released by CoSIDA Tuesday, June 9, while the Women’s At-Large Team will be released Thursday, June 11.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team saw its 2009 season come to a close with a disappointing 2-1 loss to UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter. Kayleigh Bell scored the game-winning goal for the Falcons on the power play at 11:30 of the third period. UW-River Falls now advances to play Elmira in a NCAA Semifinal game next Friday, March 20 in Middlebury, Vt. Gustavus concludes its season with a record of 22-2-4.

The game was played at a level befitting a NCAA Tournament game with both teams playing very aggressively and creating numerous scoring opportunities. In addition, both goaltenders played extremely well which led to the low-scoring affair.

Neither team was able to find the net in the first period although both squads had several good opportunities to score. There were three penalties whistled in the period, two on UW-River Falls and one on Gustavus.

In the second period, UW-River Falls took advantage of some good fortune right off of the face-off as the puck took a funny bounce off the boards right on to the stick of Stefanie Schmitz who found herself behind the Gustavus defense. Schmitz skated in on a breakaway against Gustie goaltender Danielle Justice and she used an impressive fake to the backhand before pulling back to the forehand where she deposited the puck into an open net just :20 seconds into the period. The goal snapped a string of 463 consecutive scoreless minutes for the Gusties that stretched over nine games. UW-River Falls held its lead for the next 12 minutes, before the Gusties evened the score at 1-1 on a goal that Lynn Hillen deflected into the net at the 12:58 mark. Gracie Olson sent a blast at the net from about 20-feet away in the center of the ice that Hillen deflected into the top of the net. The puck shot right back out of the net, and although the goal judge’s light went on there was no whistle, so UW-River Falls took possession of the puck and raced down the other end of the ice on a breakaway and scored. After several minutes of discussion between the officials and the goal judge, it was ruled that Hillen’s shot did indeed enter the net and bounce back out which allowed the Gusties to tie the score at 1-1. The second period ended with the score tied at 1-1.

The first half of the third period was played at a very quick pace with both teams pushing the puck up and down the ice. UW-River Falls would get a big opportunity six minutes into the period when the Gusties were whistled for two penalties twenty seconds apart, giving the Falcons a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:40. UW-River Falls put good pressure on Gustavus goaltender Danielle Justice, but were not able to find the net and the Gusties were able to kill of both penalties. Less than a minute after killing off the two-player advantage, Gustavus was whistled for too many players on the ice and it would turn out to be a very costly penalty for the Gusties. The Falcons continued their pressure in the Gustavus zone and with just :12 seconds left in the penalty, Kayleigh Bell registered what would turn out to be the game-winning goal as she fired a bullet through a lot of traffic and into the net at the 11:30 mark. At the 12:47 mark, the Falcons were assessed a tripping penalty and the Gusties would get their last chance on the power play. Gustavus controlled the puck for almost the entire two minutes and put five quality shots on Falcons goaltender Cassi Campbell, but the Gusties could not register the equalizer. UW-River Falls sat back in a very defensive position the final five minutes of the game and turned away several strong rushes by Gustavus to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Danielle Justice, who suffered just her second loss of the season (10-2-4), recorded 18 saves, while Cassi Campbell, who improved to 13-2-2, registered 35 saves.

UW-River Falls will advance to the Division III Frozen Four for the second time in the program’s history (the other appearance was in 2003), while the Gusties were knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round by a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) foe for the fourth consecutive year.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team has been selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament and the Gusties will host the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 14 at 2:00 pm at Don Roberts Ice Rink. This is the eighth consecutive year that Gustavus has been selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the Gustavus/UW-River Falls game will advance to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals, which will be held at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont on March 20-21. Tickets for Saturday’s game, which are $6 for adults and $3 for students, will be sold the day of the game only, beginning one hour prior to the start of the contest.

The Gusties, who won both the regular season and playoff titles in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by defeating St. Thomas 3-0 in the MIAC Playoff Championship game last Wednesday, March 4 at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad has been on quite a roll of late having won seven consecutive games by shutout and out-scoring its opponents 28-0 during that stretch. Offensively, the team has been led lately by the quartet of seniors Jessie Doig and Mari Gunderson, junior Melissa Mackley, and first year Allie Schwab. That group has combined to score 18 of the 27 goals during the shutout streak with Gunderson and Schwab scoring five goals each, and Doig and Mackley scoring four goals each. Defensively, Gustavus has been led all season by the first year goaltending tandem of Danielle Justice and Emily Klatt. Justice is 10-1-4 with a 0.71 goals against average and seven shutouts, while Klatt is 12-0-0 with a 0.69 goals against average and six shutouts. Klatt ranks first in Division III in goals against average (0.69), while Justice is second (0.71). Gustavus is in the midst of a 26-game unbeaten streak (22-0-4) dating back to the first game of the season when the Gusties lost to Adrian 2-1 in overtime. The streak is the longest in women’s collegiate hockey this season. Gustavus enters the tournament with a record of 22-1-4.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team scored once in the second period and twice in the third period on its way to a 3-0 win over St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship game which was played at Don Roberts Ice Rink on the Gustavus campus. Melissa Mackley scored two goals including an empty net goal with :30 seconds left in the game, while Danielle Justice turned in a stellar performance in the nets making 23 saves and recording her sixth shutout of the season. The Gusties improve to 22-1-4 on the season.

With the win, Gustavus earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament which begins with first round games the weekend of March 13-14. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced Monday, March 9 on a live selection show that will be video streamed through NCAA.com. The exact time of the announcement has not yet been released.

The game was played at a level befitting a conference playoff championship game with both teams pushing the puck up and down the ice. The Gusties controlled play for the better part of the game, but St. Thomas counterattacked effectively which game them several legitimate scoring each period. Both goaltenders, Justice for Gustavus and Bradel for St. Thomas, played extremely well and registered numerous big saves.

The Gusties got the puck past the Tommies Bradel midway through the first period, however the goal was waved off due to a high stick and as a result, the score was tied 0-0 at the end of the first period. Gustavus out-shot St. Thomas 12-1 in the period.

The back-and-forth action continued through the second period with both teams putting together several legitimate scoring opportunities, however each time Bradel and Justice came up with the save. With the second period winding down, Gustavus got the important first goal when junior forward Melissa Mackley took a sharp pass across the crease from Allie Schwab and one-timed a shot past a sprawling Bradel into the net at the 15:32 mark. The Gusties took their 1-0 lead into the locker room after two periods. Shots were even at 5-5 in the period.

St. Thomas came out firing early in the third period and out-shot the Gusties 8-1 in the first seven minutes of play. Fortunately for Gustavus, goaltender Danielle Justice was at the top of her game and turned the Tommies away at every opportunity. The Gusties slowly took control of the game again and scored the all-important second goal on an outstanding individual effort by senior forward Mari Gunderson who raced up the left side of the ice and flipped a backhand up in the air and past Bradel as she was being taken out of the play by a Tommie defender at the 13:50 mark. Alyssa Gaulrapp was credited with an assist. With the game winding down, St. Thomas pulled its goaltender with 1:20 left to play and Melissa Mackley put the game on ice for Gustavus with an empty net goal at the 19:28 mark.

The Gusties posted an impressive seventh straight shutout (a string of 437 consecutive minutes). The team has not allowed a goal since midway through the third period against St. Kate’s in St. Peter on Feb. 7. It is the longest scoreless streak in the 12-year history of the Gustavus women’s hockey program.

Gustavus will enter the NCAA Tournament on 26-game unbeaten streak dating back to the first game of the 2008-09 season when it suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime to Adrian College.

The Gusties and Tommies were playing in the MIAC Playoff Championship game for the seventh consecutive year and the Gusties claimed their sixth consecutive league playoff title. Gustavus, which has advanced to the championship game of the MIAC Playoffs in each of the ten years the conference has sponsored a tournament, has now won the playoff title seven times. The Gusties have compiled a record of 18-4-2 in MIAC Playoff games.

Schwab’s first goal at 19:02 of the first period gave Gustavus a 2-0 lead. She stole the puck in the St. Olaf zone, beat one defender and then snapped a wrist shot into the upper left corner from a sharp angle at the bottom of the left face-off circle. Schwab’s second goal at 17:03 of the second period was again due to outstanding individual effort as she beat a defender at the blue line and then beat the goaltender with a wrist shot into the upper left corner. The goal gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead. Schwab leads the team in goals scored with 14. Gustavus, which is now 21-1-4 on the season, will face St. Thomas on Wednesday in St. Peter in the MIAC Playoff Championship game.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team took one step closer to its goal of winning its fifth straight MIAC Playoff Championship by defeating St. Olaf 5-0 in a MIAC Playoff Semifinal game on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter. The Gusties, who posted their sixth consecutive shutout, have not allowed a goal in 382 minutes and 40 seconds dating back to the third period of the St. Kate’s game on Feb. 7. Mari Gunderson and Allie Schwab both scored twice to lead the Gusties.

Gustavus dominated play from start to finish out-shooting St. Olaf 52-10 in the game including 13-1 in the first period, 21-1 in the second period, and 18-8 in the third period. The Gusties led 2-0 after the first period and 3-0 through two periods before claiming the 5-0 victory. Gustavus goaltender Danielle Justice came up big when she had to in the game as she stopped two breakaways as well as several good chances when the Oles had a 5-on-3 advantage for nearly two minutes in the third period. Justice, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season, made 10 saves. She improved her record to 10-1-4 on the season.

The Gusties got on the scoreboard with two goals within :30 seconds of each other at the end of the first period. Mari Gunderson got the first goal at 18:32, when Jessie Doig intercepted a pass and dished off a pretty pass to Gunderson who was all alone 15 feet in front of the net. Gunderson lifted a wrist shot into the upper right hand corner of the net. Thirty seconds later, Allie Schwab intercepted a pass in the St. Olaf zone and wristed a beautiful shot from the left side at a sharp angle that went over the glove of the St. Olaf goaltender and into the upper corner of the net.

Schwab scored her second goal of the game and gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead with another unassisted goal at the 17:30 mark of the second period.

Gustavus closed the door on the Oles with two power play goals in the first three minutes of the third period. Kirsten Peterson netted the first just :13 seconds into the final frame with an assist from Mollie Carroll. Gunderson extended the score to 5-0 with her second goal of the game at the 3:09 mark. Doig and Peterson were credited with assists.

The Oles did put some pressure on the Gusties five minutes into the final period when Nara Higano was sent to the box for hooking and shortly after Jenny Pusch was whistled for checking giving the Oles nearly two minutes of a 5-on-3 advantage. St. Olaf fired three quality shots on Justice during that period and she responded with three big saves to shut down the Ole threat.

Gustavus, which is the #1 seed in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament, will now host St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship on Wednesday, March 4 at 4 pm. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Four members of the Gustavus women’s hockey team were named to the All-Conference Team by the league coaches on Thursday. The group includes senior forward Jessie Doig (New Prague, Minn.), junior forward Melissa Mackley (Burnsville, Minn.), and sophomore defenders Sara Yungner (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) and Kirstin Peterson (St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray). Doig, Mackley, and Yungner are all first time honorees, while Peterson is a two-time selection. In addition, first year forward Allie Schwab (Stillwater, Minn.) and goaltender Danielle Justice (Alexandria, Minn.) were named to the All-Rookie team. The Gusties, who are currently ranked #1 in the USCHO.com poll, won their fifth consecutive league title with a record of 16-0-2.

Doig led the MIAC in goals scored with 11 and in game-winning goals with five. A four-year letterwinner for the Gusties, Doig has scored 38 goals and 35 assists for 73 points in 108 games during her career. She has caught fire late in the season scoring six goals in the teams final eight games.

Mackley, who is one of three captains for the Gusties, was an honorable mention selection a year ago. She finished second in the MIAC in scoring this season with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points and was tied for first in short-handed goals with two. She leads the team in scoring with six goals and 19 assists for 25 points.

Yungner was an integral part of a Gustavus defense that led the nation in allowed a meager 0.76 goals per game including a total of 19 goals in 25 games this season. She also contributed on the offensive end scoring four goals and recording four assists for eight points.

Peterson was the other key to the stingy Gustavus defense that recorded 11 shutouts in 25 games and allowed only four opponents to score more than one goal in a game. She was also a key part of the power play unit scoring three goals and registering 11 assists for 14 points.

Allie Schwab and Danielle Justice were two of the six members named to the All-Rookie team by the league coaches. Schwab is the Gusties third leading scorer with 12 goals and six assists for 18 points. She also finished third in scoring among freshman in MIAC play with nine goals and seven assists for 16 points. Schwab also received honorable mention on the All-Conference team. Justice has quickly become one of the premier goaltenders in Division III having compiled a record of 9-1-4 overall and 7-0-2 in the MIAC. She ranks second in Division III having compiled a 0.81 goals against average.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the third annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women’s hockey. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Gustavus’ representative on the Sportsmanship Team is senior tri-captain Christine Wicker.
