Mark Adams scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season as the Gustavus men’s soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. Adams scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Stefan Kolis.

The Gustavus net was mostly unchallenged today as the Gustie defense allowed only four Augsburg shots in the match. Gustavus finished the game with 11 shots as six different players had one shot on goal. Augsburg won the corner kick advantage 8-6, yet were turned away as Gustavus defenders were able to effectively clear the zone all afternoon. Gustavus Goalkeeper Luke Strom registered his second straight shutout as he made two saves in the match. Mark Adams finishes the season as top scorer with 10 goals and 4 assists for 24 points. Bret Vander Streek was the squad’s second leading scorer with 6 goals and 3 assists for 15 points.

It was Senior Day at the Gustavus Soccer Field as six seniors were honored for their commitment and dedication to the Gustavus Soccer Program. A special thanks goes out to seniors Stefan Kolis, Bret Vander Streek, Abdul Suleyman, Fraser Horton, Skylar Schulz, and Chris Adams.

Gustavus saw its season come to an end when St. Olaf defeated Carleton on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with St. Thomas and Concordia, however St. Thomas won the tiebreaker for the final playoff spot due to head-to-head record against the tied teams. St. Thomas was 1-0-1 with a win over Gustavus and a tie with Concordia, while Gustavus was 1-1-0 with a win over Concordia and a loss to St. Thomas and Concordia was 0-1-1 with a loss to Gustavus and tie with Concordia.

Gustavus Adolphus College sophomore forward Mark Adams (Waukee, IA) has been named MIAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. Adams had scored a hat trick in the 4-3 victory over Bethel last Friday. One of his three goals included the game winner in the 84th minute on a shot that glanced off the right post and into the net. Adams has been key to the Gusties’ success in the last part of the season as he has gone on a scoring tear as of late. He has tallied a total of 16 points on six goals and four assists as the Gusties have gone 4-1 in their past five matches. The win over Hamline on Tuesday gave Gustavus three points and moved them into a three way tie for fourth place in the MIAC.

The Gusties play their last regular season game on Saturday, Ocotober 31, at 1 p.m. against Augsburg College in St. Peter, MN.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team needed a win to stay in the hunt for a MIAC Playoff spot an the Gusties played like it claiming a convincing 4-0 win over Hamline in St. Peter on Tuesday afternoon. Bret Vander Streek led the Gustavus attack with two goals, while Stefan Kolis added a goal and an assist, and Mark Adams picked up three assists. Luke Strom picked up the shutout win in the nets.

Vander Streek got the Gusties off to a quick start as he took a pass from Stefan Kolis and beat Piper goalkeeper Zach Nelson just 37 seconds into the match. Gustavus held on to its 1-0 lead through the entire first half and then Kolis picked up a rebound of a hard shot by Mark Adams and pushed into a wide open net just 38 seconds before the intermission. Gustavus led 2-0 at halftime.

The Gusties continued to control play in the second half and just missed on a couple of excellent scoring opportunities. Midway through the half, Piper forward Dave Donner blasted a point blank shot at Gustavus goalkeeper Luke Strom who made an outstanding reflex save. The Gusties cleared the ball and quickly started a counter attack and the result was a breakaway goal for Vander Streek, his second of the game at the 70:43 mark. Mark Adams was credited with the assist.

Fraser Horton makes a move to get past a Hamline defender in the midfield.

Ten minutes later, junior midfielder Max Malmquist closed out the scoring when he took a pass from Mark Adams, beat a defender with a nifty move at the top of the 18-yard line and directed a shot just inside the right post at the 80:21 mark. The goal was Malmquist’s second of the season, while Adams picked up his third assist of the contest.

The win was important for Gustavus as it created a three-way tie for fourth place with one game left in regular season play (the top four teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the MIAC Playoffs). Gustavus (8-6-3 overall, 5-3-1 in the MIAC) needs to defeat Augsburg on Saturday and get some help from some other teams if they are going to qualify for the MIAC Playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

an important 2-1 win over Macalester at the Gustavus Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon. Mark Adams took a pass from Ben Ceder and pushed the ball quickly up the left side of the field where he drove a ball through the middle of the Macalester box near the six-yard line. The ball skipped through the box and on to the foot of Vander Streek who was waiting on the far post and he one timed the pass into the upper right corner of the net for the game-winner.

The Gusties took a 1-0 lead early in the contest when Mark Adams took a pass from midfielder Fraser Horton and dribbled up the left side of the field beating one defender before bending a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal.

Macalester tied the score at 1-1 when Taylor Rasmussen took advantage of a Gustavus miscue in its own end and dribbled straight in on Gustavus goalie Ben Kolis, beating him with a blast into the upper right corner. The unassisted goal was scored at the 63:44 mark.

The Scots put some pressure on the Gusties in the first overtime, but could not take advantage of a couple of opportunities and Gustavus was able to clear the ball without Macalester ever getting a shot on goal.

The Gusties held a slim advantage in shots at 9-4, but most of that was due to a 6-1 advantage in the first half.

Ben Kolis registered his first collegiate win in the nets for Gustavus as he played all 103 minutes in goal making four saves. Mark Mullaney suffered the loss in the nets for Macalester as he also recorded four saves.

Gustavus will play an important MIAC match at St. Thomas on Saturday and then return home to face non-conference opponent Luther on Sunday.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team saw its struggles continue with a 1-0 loss to St. Olaf on Saturday in St. Peter. The Gusties are 0-2-1 over the last week scoring only one goal in the three matches. The Oles tallied the gamewinner in the fourth minute of the contest off a header by Nate Swenson.

The match got off to a quick start with a flurry of shots on goal. The Gusties would get a great opportunity in third minute when Kyle Sadler drove a shot from the right side that ricocheted off the crossbar, but the Oles quickly countered and scored off a header by Nate Swanson. John Zietlow picked up the assist.

The Gusties would have the better of the chances in the second half as St. Olaf retreated into a defensive mode. Kyle Sadler would get another great opportunity for Gustavus in the 68th minute but once again he would rip a shot off the crossbar that was played away by St. Olaf.

Gustavus held a 12-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Luke Strom suffered the loss in the nets for the Gusties making three saves and allowing one goal. Harry Ullmann, who made his first appearance in goal for the Oles this season, claimed the shutout win. He registered four saves.

The Gusties are now 4-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the MIAC, while #21 Oles improve to 8-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team got a second half goal from Grant Steine to tie the score at 1-1, but that would be the only goal of the night for the Gusties as they had to settle for a 1-1 tie in two overtimes. Gustavus is now 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the MIAC.

The first half was very evenly played statistically, but the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Steve Boussie in the 27th minute. Saint Mary’s would take their 1-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Gusties started to control play and tied the match on Steine’s goal in the 57th minute with an assist from Fraser Horton. Gustavus dominated the second forty-five minutes statistically outshooting the Cardinals 11-3, but the Cardinals got some big saves from Jon Szafranski and sent the match to overtime.

In the overtime, Gustavus continue to control play outshooting Saint Mary’s 7-1 in the two 10-minute extra sessions, however Szafranski came up with four more saves and the Gusties had to settle for the 1-1 tie.

Gustavus held a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, while the Cardinals committed nearly twice as many fouls with 13 whistles compared to seven for Gustavus.

The Gusties will return home to host St. Olaf on Saturday at 1 pm.
