Gustavus senior forward David Martinson continued his torrid scoring streak as he tallied four goals for the second consecutive game, but it would not be enough as the the Bethel Royals tied the score at 5-5 with 30 seconds left in regulation and then scored the gamewinner with a minute left in overtime to beat the Gusties 6-5 in St. Peter.

With one minute left in regulation play, it appeared that Gustavus might be on its way to handing Bethel its first loss in conference play as the Gusties led 5-4 and had put several shots on the open Royal net, however Bethel put a shot on net with 50 seconds remaining and the Gusties Josh Swartout made the save forcing a faceoff in the Gustavus zone. The Royals called a timeout with 42 seconds left and when play resumed, Bethel managed to take advantage of a fortunate bounce off a deflected shot and tie the score with a goal by Jon Crouse with 30 seconds on the clock.

In overtime, the Gusties Joe Welch was whistled for elbowing at the 1:58 mark and with 12 seconds left in the penalty and 1:13 left in the extra session, Mason Swens0n ripped a slapshot from the top of the left circle that just snuck under the crossbar in the upper right corner of the net giving the Royals the improbable win in St. Peter.

Six different players scored for Bethel. Jack Paul and Jake Kogler scored in the first period, Tom Menozzie scored in the second period, Chris Fiala and Jon Crouse scored in the third period and then Swenson tallied the game-winner in overtime.

Josh Swartout stops a Royal breakaway.

For Gustavus, it was all David Martinson for the second consecutive game as the senior forward from St. Louis Park scored four times including three power play goals. A quick check of the record book shows that it is likely the first time a Gustavus player has scored a hat trick in consecutive games since Gary Hansen did it against Macalester and Hamline in January of 1975. Martinson has now scored nine goals in seven games this season. He entered the game with 94 career points and with the four goals against Bethel, Martinson now needs just two points to become the 33rd player in program history to compile 100 career points.

Senior forward Rory Dynan scored the other goal for the Gusties. Ross Ring-Jarvi and Patrick Dynan both assisted on three of Martinson’s four goals.

Josh Swartout suffered the loss in the nets for Gustavus. He registered 22 saves. Aaron Damjanovich picked up the win for the Royals. He made 26 saves.

Each team was whistled for seven penalties for a total of 14 minutes. Bethel was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Gusties were 3-for-6 with the player advantage.

Gustavus falls to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAC, while Bethel improves to 3-4-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAC. The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow night at Bethel. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 pm at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

Gustavus senior forward David Martinson has been named the MIAC Men’s Hockey Player of the Week for his efforts in helping Gustavus claim a win and a tie in last weekend’s important conference series with St. Olaf.

David Martinson, a St. Louis Park, Minn. native, registered a seven-point weekend to help the Gusties claim three points in an important MIAC series against St. Olaf. Martinson recorded two assists in Friday’s 3-3 tie at Northfield, and then exploded for four goals in the Gusties 5-4 win in St. Peter on Saturday. Martinson’s first goal tied the score at 2-2 in the first period and his second goal tied the score at 3-3 in the second period. His third and fourth goals came 90 seconds apart early in the third period giving Gustavus a 5-3 lead. Martinson’s fourth goal turned out to be the game-winner. The Gusties and defending champion Oles were picked by the league coaches to be two of the top teams in the league this season and the series, even though it was played in the opening week of MIAC play, was significant. Martinson, a 2008-09 All-American, has now scored five goals and registered seven assists for 12 points in six games this season. He currently leads the nation in shorthanded goals with two and ranks 16th in points scored at 2.00 per game. Gustavus is now 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the MIAC.

The 10th ranked Gustavus men’s hockey team opened its 2009-10 season by splitting its two games at the MIAC Showcase which was played at the Bloomington Ice Gardens. The Gusties opened with a 4-3 win over Bethel University on Saturday night and then wrapped up the weekend with a 5-3 loss to Augsburg on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, the Gusties trailed 3-2 after two periods, but rallied to score twice in the third period to claim the 4-3 win. Patrick Dynan gave Gustavus a 1-0 with a goal just 58 seconds into the match. Ross Ring-Jarvi was credited with the assist. The Royals, however, rallied to score the next three goals. Gustavus cut the lead to 3-2 when Ross Ring-Jarvi scored a short-handed goal at the 17:41 mark of the second period. The Gusties came out fired up in the third period and tied the score at 3-3 when Brad Wieck scored a power play goal at the 2:41 mark. James Leathers scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 13:43 mark. Josh Swartout recorded 13 saves and picked up the win in the nets.

On Sunday, the Gusties once again got off to a slow start and trailed 4-1 midway through the second period, however there would be no third period rally and the Gusties lost 5-3 to Augsburg. Patrick Dynan, David Martinson, and Dennis Webster scored for Gustavus. Dynan’s and Martinson’s goal were both shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored three shorthanded goals in their two weekend games. Jake Swansson suffered the loss in the nets for Gustavus. He allowed five goals and recorded 29 saves.

The Gusties will make a road trip to Wisconsin next weekend to face UW-River Falls on Friday night and UW-Eau Claire on Saturday night.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team will open its 2009-10 season this Saturday and Sunday at the MIAC Showcase which will take place at the Bloomington Ice Gardens. Gustavus will play Bethel on Saturday at 8 pm and Augsburg on Sunday at 5 pm.

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the storied history of the Gustavus men’s hockey program, Coach Brett Petersen and his squad will look to make another magical late season run with a squad that returns its top six scorers and 19 letterwinners from a team that won the MIAC Post-season Tournament and finished second at the NCAA Tournament. All-America forward David Martinson will lead the way along with all-conference performers Ross Ring-Jarvi (forward) and Josh Swartout (goaltender) and NCAA All-Tournament selection Patrick Dynan (forward).
A young team with potential at the beginning of the 2008-09 season, the Gusties matured late in the year into one of the top teams in Division III. This season, however, Gustavus is a veteran team with significant tournament experience under its belt and the Gusties will be the “hunted” instead of the “hunter”. How this team responds to that challenge will go a long way towards determining what the 2009-10 Golden Gustie squad can accomplish as all the pieces are there for this team to contend for the MIAC title and make another run in the NCAA Tournament.

Leadership will be an important factor and the Gusties will look to senior captain Cody Mosbeck and senior assistant captains David Martinson and Joe Welch. This trio has played in virtually every game for the past two seasons and understands the importance of being prepared to perform every day in practice and at every game. Martinson, a First Team AHCA All-America selection, led the Gusties in scoring a year ago with 26 goals and 15 assists for 41 points. His 26 goals ranked second in Division III last year. Welch, an All-American safety on the Gustavus football team, will join the team in mid-November as he has for the past four seasons. He is hard-nosed forward that is particularly tough on the forecheck. He contributed 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points in 24 games a year ago. Mosbeck will anchor the blue line for the fourth straight year. His steady play in front of the net helped the Gusties lead the MIAC in scoring defense last season allowing 2.25 goals per game.

Martinson will be joined up front by sophomore Ross Ring-Jarvi (10g, 21a), senior Patrick Dynan (8g, 16a), junior Brad Wieck (8g, 16a), senior Eric Bigham (14g, 8a), and senior Rory Dynan (12g, 9a). Defensively, Mosbeck will be joined by junior Mitch Carlson, an honorable all-conference selection last year, and seniors Tony Palma and Spencer Campion. Junior Josh Swartout will return in the nets where he finished second in the MIAC in goals against average (2.33) and save percentage (.910) last season.

2009 MIAC Men’s Hockey Showcase Preview (Donny Nadeau, Saint Mary’s Sports Information)

The inaugural Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Hockey Showcase kicks off on Friday, October 30 as Bethel and Augsburg square off in a 2 p.m. contest at the Bloomington Ice Gardens. Saint Mary’s vs. St. Thomas (5 p.m.) and St. Olaf vs. Hamline (8 p.m.) complete the first day of the three-day event.

“We expect the MIAC Hockey Showcase to be a fantastic way to kick off another successful year of men’s hockey,” stated MIAC Executive Director Dan McKane, noting that the nine MIAC men’s hockey teams will each play two nonconference games, with games set for 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 1. “The event is a great way to showcase the amazing amount of talent that plays in our conference. The MIAC is regarded as one of the best conferences in NCAA Division III and fans who attend the Showcase will see for themselves the incredible skill and athleticism of our nine teams.”

St. Olaf captured its first MIAC regular-season title in 70 years last season, going 12-1-3, but it was Gustavus that stole the show, winning the conference’s post-season tournament — and earning the MIAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament. At the national level, the Gusties blanked UW-Superior 2-0, then followed that up with a 3-2 OT win over UW-Stout to reach the national championship game, where Gustavus fell to Neumann 4-1.

Live stats will be provided for all nine of the games during the Showcase through the link below.

Ticket prices are $5 which includes admission for the entire day. Children 5 and under are free.

Gustavus Adolphus College senior swimmer and junior hockey player David Martinson have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team as released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Pearson, a College Division First Team selection, and Martinson, a College Division Third Team selection, are the third and fourth Gustavus student-athletes to be named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans this year.

Dave Pearson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) was a key member of men’s swimming and diving teams that won MIAC Championships in 2006 and 2008 and finished second in 2007 and 2009. He was a part of several relay teams including the 800 yard free relay that finished first at the MIAC Championships in both 2008 and 2009 and went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships with a sixth place finish in 2008 and an eighth-place finish in 2009. The 2008 800 free relay team set the conference and school record with a time of 6:44.64. Pearson earned All-MIAC honors by finishing in the top three in an individual event or relay seven times during his career. He was also awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Pearson, a chemistry major with a 4.0 gpa, is the son of Scott and Kathleen Pearson of Woodbury and a 2005 graduate of Stillwater Area High School.

David Martinson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.), a 2009 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) First Team All-America honoree, helped the Gusties finish second at the NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey Championship this season. He led Gustavus in scoring with 26 goals and 15 assists for 41 points, and ranked second in Division III in goals scored at 26. The two-time All-MIAC selection also led the squad with seven power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Martinson, an accounting major with a 3.85 gpa, is the son of Phil and Lynn Martinson of St. Louis Park and a 2004 graduate of St. Louis Park High School.

Pearson and Martinson become the 77th and 78th Gustavus student athletes to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Pearson is the second men’s swimmer and Martinson is the first men’s hockey player at Gustavus to be honored by CoSIDA. Gustavus ranks seventh among all Division III institutions in number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans with 78.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The men’s at-large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Former Gustavus Adolphus College men’s hockey coach Don Roberts has been recognized for his lengthy and outstanding service to college hockey by being named the 2009 recipient of the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey Award.

The award, presented by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation, will be presented to Roberts at the annual banquet on May 7 at 317 On Rice Park in St. Paul, Minn. He will be honored along with Matt Gilroy of Boston University, who is the 2009 Hobey Baker Award winner. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and program from 7-9 p.m. Tickets for the banquet are available for purchase online at www.hobeybaker.com.

Roberts coached Gustavus to a 532-290-25 record in a career that spanned 33 seasons (1964-1997) and he retired as the winningest coach in the history of Division III men’s hockey in 1997 with 532 victories. Roberts 532 wins rank 12th all-time in all divisions of collegiate hockey.

Recognized as one of the most prominent coaches in college hockey history, Roberts served as the chairman of the board and president of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), as well as being a longtime member of the NCAA Rules and Hockey Advisory committees. Roberts received the John MacInnes Award from the AHCA for lifetime commitment to collegiate hockey in 1993. He was named MIAC Coach of the Year seven times (1973, 1975, 1976, 1984, 1990, 1991, and 1993) and in 1975 he was named the National Coach of the Year by both the AHCA and the NAIA.

When Roberts was named the head hockey coach at Gustavus in 1964, he had not ever played or coached hockey before in his life. He had coached football and baseball in the Marines from 1957-59 and football, wrestling, and baseball at Gustavus from 1959-65. His first hockey team finished with a 1-14 record, however, the following year Roberts’ squad won the school’s first MIAC title and the Gusties went on to win 12 of the next 13 league titles. His team’s also had success at the national level where they finished at the top four at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships for ten consecutive years (1968-77). The Gusties finished second at the NAIA Championships three times — 1972, 1975, and 1977. After 1980, when Gustavus became a member of NCAA Division III, the Gusties played in the NCAA National Tournament seven times, including an appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four in 1982.

During his career, Roberts coached 54 separate skaters, who earned all-conference honors at least once, as well as 28 players who were named to NAIA or AHCA All-America squads. He also coached Chuck Linnerooth, the first hockey player inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.

Roberts, a 1956 graduate of Gustavus, played a key role in the fundraising and construction of the school’s ice arena, which is also a multi-purpose facility that is used to host conventions as well as the College’s annual Nobel Conference. The Ice Arena was named in his honor in 1998.

Don and his wife, Nancy, who live in St. Peter, are the parents of four children, Gregg, Tim, Mike, and Susan.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team scored the first goal of the game, but fell to Neumann College 4-1 in the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship game on Saturday at Herb Brooks Ice Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. David Martinson tallied his 26th goal of the season at 4:54 in the first period to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead. However, Neumann would go on to score four consecutive goals en route to the win. Gustavus, which finished the season at 19-11-0, was making its first appearance in the NCAA Championship game. Patrick Dynan was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Martinson lit the lamp for Gustavus at 4:54 in the first period when he banked a shot off of Neumann goaltender Ross MacKinnon’s back from behind the goal line after he came out of the crease. Brad Wieck earned an assist on the goal as he put the initial shot on net. After a penalty against the Gusties, Ryan Heickert tied the score for the Knights when he deflected a shot by Sean Bianchini from the right point past Gustavus goaltender Matthew Lopes at the 12:52 mark. Both teams skated into the first intermission with the score tied 1-1 despite the Gusties outshooting Neumann 8-3.

The Knights turned up the pressure on Gustavus in its defensive zone in the second period. The increased intensity resulted in a backhand goal by Jesse Cole that trickled between Lopes’ five-hole as the Gusties failed to clear a rebound out of the zone to give Neumann a 2-1 lead at 3:06 in the frame. Minutes later, the Knights capitalized on an error by the Gustavus defense creating a two-on-one breakaway. Ryan Heickert brought the puck up the right side of the rink and maintained control of the puck long enough to draw the Gustie defenseman. Heickert found Jesse Cole at the left faceoff circle for a wrist shot that beat Lopes on the blocker side to give Neumann at 3-1 lead at 6:53. A Gustie penalty led to the Knights’ fourth goal of the game when a blast from Marlon Gardner at the center of the blue line got through a screen at 10:37.

Gustavus had several opportunities to score in the final minute, but came up empty in the effort. Eric Bigham had the best chance as he took a shot that hit the right pipe, then went off MacKinnon’s back and trickled to the right side of the rink out of the reach of the Gustie forwards ready for the rebound. Gustavus trailed 4-1 heading into the final period as Neumann held a 16-8 advantage with shots on goal for the period.

The Knights cut off the passing lanes in the final period as they were able to sag in the defensive zone with the three-goal lead. Neumann was whistled for too many men on the ice at 14:47. With a three-goal deficit, Coach Brett Petersen pulled Lopes for an additional skater on the ensuing faceoff for the duration of the game. However, the Gusties were only able to put one quality shot on net with the advantage as Neumann claimed the 4-1 victory.

Gustavus netminder Matt Lopes made 18 saves on 22 shots on goal as he ended the season with an 11-5-0 record. Neumann goaltender Ross MacKinnon, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, stopped 24 shots and allowed one goal. Each squad was whistled for five penalties as the Gusties were 0-for-5 with the extra attacker and the Knights were 2-for-5.

ADDITIONAL GAME NOTES

- David Martinson’s goal increased his single-season total to 26, moving him into a four-way tie for 10th place on the Gustavus all-time single-season list. It is the highest single-season goal total recorded by a Gustie since 1995-96 whne Jason Lesteberg tallied 26 goals.

- The second goal scored by Neumann at 3:06 in the second period marked the first time in 190:59 that Gustavus trailed in a contest. The streak dates back to March 4 when Hamline held a lead in the first period before the Gusties came back to win 5-2.

Patrick Dynan scored two goals including the game-winning goal at 6:31 in overtime to lift the No. 15 Gustavus men’s hockey team over No. 2 UW-Stout by a score of 3-2 in the NCAA Semifinals on Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Gusties, who improved their overall mark to 19-10-0, snapped a 15-game unbeaten streak for the Blue Devils. Gustavus advanced to its first ever NCAA Championship game with the victory. Head Coach Brett Petersen’s squad will face the winner of Hobart/Neumann on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. CST (5 p.m. EST). The championship contest will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports, which is available on DIRECTV. Live stats will also be available here.

Three minutes into the first period, UW-Stout had the first scoring chance of the game when a Blue Devil forward got behind the Gustavus defense, but Gustie goaltender Matthew Lopes made the save as he narrowly kept the puck from crossing the goal line. Minutes later, David Martinson nearly put Gustavus on the board when he took a backhand that nearly got past UW-Stout goaltender Matt Koenig, but Martinson was unable to convert the rebound. Both teams struggled to create any offensive flow throughout the period due to several penalties called against both squads. The score was tied 0-0 at the first intermission.

The Gusties started the second period on the power play as the Blue Devils were called for cross-checking at the end of the first period. Gustavus was unable to generate any offense during the power play. The Gusties got on the scoreboard when Patrick Dynan snuck the puck between Koenig’s left leg and the right post at 5:32 in the second period. Brothers Casey and Rory were awarded assists on the goal.

UW-Stout evened the game minutes later on a power play as forward Joel Gaulrapp got the puck past Lopes as he was sliding across the crease to make the save at 11:45 in the period. Lopes laid on the ice for several minutes after the play, but stayed in the contest.

The Gusties took a 2-1 lead minutes later on another power play as Eric Bigham flipped a rebound over Koenig’s blocker into the upper left hand corner of the net after an initial shot by Mitch Carlson. Joe Welch was also credited with an assist on the goal as Gustavus skated into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

Goaltender Josh Swartout started the third period in the net for the Gusties in place of Lopes. Gustavus had a great opportunity to take a two-goal lead at 13:35 when Jamie Leathers put a point blank shot on goal, but was turned away by Koenig, who made a brilliant glove save to keep the puck out of the net.

On the ensuing shift, the Blue Devils tied the score at 2-2 when a shot from Wolgemuth at the point was deflected in by Scott Motz with 5:36 remaining in the game. With under three minutes on the clock, Eric Bigham had a scoring chance as he skated between both defenders to get off a backhand shot as Koenig made the stop. Ross Ring-Jarvi had a similar opportunity in last minute, but was unable to gain control of the puck. UW-Stout put a few shots on net before the end of the contest as Swartout recorded the saves to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Casey Dynan banked a pass up the left boards to Patrick Dynan, who skated in on Koenig. Dynan took a shot that deflected off the end of the defenseman’s stick and found its way into the net on the short side between Koenig’s right pad and the right post to send the Gusties into the championship game. It is the first time in NCAA Division III Frozen Four history that brothers have collaborated on two goals in a game.

Gustavus also made history with the victory as it is the first team with double-digit losses to move into the NCAA Division III Championship game.

Gustavus used two goaltenders in the game as Matthew Lopes played the first two periods before suffering a back injury. Josh Swartout played the third period and the overtime. Lopes made 18 saves and allowed one goal, while Swartout recorded 14 stops and allowed one goal. The Blue Devils’ Matt Koenig compiled 35 saves in the loss. The Gusties held a slim 38-34 shot advantage. The officials assessed 17 penalties during the game including 8-for-16 against Gustavus and 9-for-18 against UW-Stout. The Gusties were 2-for-8 with the extra attacker, while the Blue Devils were 1-for-7.
