The Gustavus baseball team pounded out 27 hits as it broke out of its offensive slump to post a doubleheader sweep over Macalester by the scores of 11-3 and 8-6 on Thursday in St. Peter. Spencer Campion had a big day at the plate for the Gusties as he went 4-for-7, scored four runs, drove in five runs, and hit the game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to help Gustavus earn the sweep. Brandon Knoll earned the win in the first game by going the distance on the mound, while Derek Eddie picked up the victory in relied in the second game. The Gusties improved to 17-19 overall and 9-9 in the MIAC.

The Scots struck right away in the first inning as they posted two base hits to produce the game’s first run. Gustavus started its half of the inning with the bases loaded after Macalester’s starting pitcher issued a pair of walks and hit a batter. Alan Woitas and Spencer Campion delivered consecutive two-run doubles to put the Gusties ahead 4-1 with no outs. By the end of the first inning, Gustavus added two more runs to take a 6-1 lead.

The Scots cut into the lead with two runs in the third inning, however after triples by Tory Herman and Campion and a single by Alan Woitas in the fourth the Gusties put two more runs on the scoreboard in the fourth. Matt Morgan put an exclamation point on the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when he blasted a towering solo home run over the left field fence as Gustavus walked away with an 11-3 victory.

Alan Woitas and Spencer Campion each went 3-for-4 from the dish and drove in three runs, while Woitas crossed home plate three times and Campion touched home twice. Nate Ruff and Greg Lane also recorded multiple hit games as each player went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Brandon Knoll threw a complete game as he allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking one.

In the second game of the twinbill, Macalester tallied four singles in the second inning en route to scoring three runs. Devin English produced the key hit of the frame with a two-run single to left field. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad reduced its deficit to one run after putting two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning as Herman and Andrew Woitas delivered two-out RBI singles. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Gustavus trailed 6-2 before Cody Sukalski hit a bloop single near the left field line that scored two runs to cut the margin in half at 6-4. The Gusties had runners on second and third in their half of the sixth inning with two outs when Andrew Woitas hit a clutch single to bring home both runners. The rally continued as Spencer Campion roped a two-run home run over the fence in straight away center field to give Gustavus its first lead of the game at 8-6. Derek Eddie did not allow a Scot hit in the top of the seventh to earn the win in relief.

Offensively, Andrew Woitas paced the Gusties with three hits and three RBI. Spencer Campion and Cody Sukalski each drove in a pair of runs as well. Starting pitcher Alan Woitas worked five innings, giving up nine hits resulting in six runs. Eddie improved to 2-3 on the season after pitching two scoreless innings.

Gustavus, which is 17-19 overall and 9-9 in the MIAC, will close out its season at St. Thomas, which is 25-9 overall and 13-5 in league play, on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Gusties are still in the mix for a playoff spot, but need to win at least one game versus the Tommies and receive some help from other teams to earn a berth.

The Gustavus baseball team suffered a setback in the race for a post-season berth after dropping two games to St. Olaf by the scores of 11-2 and 3-2 in nine innings on Tuesday in St. Peter. The Gusties were not able to string together many hits as they managed just four hits in each game compared to the Oles, who generated more than ten hits per contest. Alan Woitas led Gustavus at the plate by going 4-for-7 with three RBI and a run scored. The Gusties fell to 7-9 in league play, while St. Olaf improved to 11-5 in the MIAC standings.

The Oles raced out to a 6-0 lead midway through the third frame of the opening game. With the bases full of Gusties in the bottom half of the third, Alan Woitas ripped a two-out single into center field driving in Andrew Woitas and Tory Herman to cut the lead to 6-2. St. Olaf squashed any Gustavus momentum, though, in the top half of the fourth when the first six batters reached before an out was recorded. The Oles tacked on five runs before the end of the inning to go ahead 11-2 as they cruised to the victory. Cody Sukalski earned the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in two innings to drop to 3-2. Derek Eddie and Adam Bren made relief appearances for the Gusties, as Eddie gave up five runs on seven hits in an inning and Bren pitched four scoreless innings.

In game two, St. Olaf’s Carson Jones started the game with a double, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Todd Mathison. The Oles loaded the bases in the same frame, but Gustavus starting pitcher Andrew Woitas worked out of the jam with a strikeout as the score stood at 1-0. The Gusties manufactured a run in the third inning after Cody Sukalski reached on an error. Sukalski stole second and advanced to third after a groundball out to the right side of the infield before he was driven in by an Alan Woitas single.

St. Olaf threatened with the bases loaded in its half of the fifth inning, but Andrew Woitas helped his cause by snagging a line drive and throwing out the runner on third for the first two outs. In the next at-bat, Todd Mathison hit a RBI-single to give the Oles a 2-1 lead. Gustavus rallied to level the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Spencer Campion drew a bases-loaded walk with one out. The next two Gustie hitters struck out looking to end the rally. Both teams had runners in scoring position in the eighth inning, but Pat Wadzinski hit a double to the left field fence that scored Carson Jones from second base to put St. Olaf ahead 3-2 in the ninth. Matt Morgan got on base after an error to start the Gustavus ninth, but a strikeout and double play ended the game as the Oles hung on for the victory.

Alan Woitas and Mike DesLauriers each went 2-for-4 accounting for all four Gustie hits, as Woitas also drove in and scored a run. Andrew Woitas gave up one earned run on eight hits in 6.1 innings in the start, while Kevin Hagen suffered the loss after allowing two hits and one run in 2.2 innings. Each pitcher struck out three St. Olaf hitters.

The Gusties, who are 15-19 overall, face Macalester on Wednesday grasping to keep their playoff chances alive. The Scots head into the doubleheader at 8-8 in the conference for seventh place in the standings. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in St. Peter.

Matt Morgan delivered a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap off a two-run rally to give the Gustavus baseball team a 2-1 walk-off win over Augsburg on Saturday in St. Peter. The Gusties dropped the second game of the doubleheader 3-0. Alan Woitas went the distance on the mound for Gustavus in game one to improve to 2-0, while Brandon Knoll suffered the loss in the nightcap. The Gusties moved to 15-17 overall and 7-7 in the MIAC, while the Auggies reached 19-17 overall and 10-8 in the conference.

Game one featured a pitchers’ duel as Augsburg’s Kristofer Ozga and Gustavus’ Alan Woitas kept the opposing team from crossing home plate through five innings. The Auggies’ Tim Gerding led off the top of the sixth inning with a single up the middle as Augsburg played small ball to score the game’s first run. Gerding advanced to second and third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundball to the right side of the infield. Craig Henry hit a ground ball up the middle past a diving Nate Ruff to drive in Gerding to give the Auggies an 1-0 lead.

Ozga had the Gustie hitters off balance through six innings before Mike DesLauriers broke up the no-hitter on a single into left center with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Tory Herman then delivered a clutch double down the right field line scoring DesLauriers from first base. After an Erik Sveen walk, Gustavus had runners on first and second as Matt Morgan came to the plate with just one out. On the second pitch of the at-bat, coach Mike Carroll called for a hit-and-run with pinch runner Cody Sukalski and Sveen on base. Morgan ripped the pitch between the third baseman and the shortstop as Sukalski came across to the game-winning run.

Alan Woitas scattered six hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk to pick up his second win of the season. The Gusties were held to just three hits, but all three came in the last inning to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The second game began in a similar fashion as both teams struggled to get runners in scoring position. Augsburg broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Craig Henry hit a RBI-double down the left field line driving in Brent Kolbow from third base. Two more runs scored after a Gustavus error before the frame was over with the Auggies leading 3-0. The Gusties mounted a comeback similar to that in game one when Tory Herman reached on an Augsburg error with one out. However, the rally ended when Gustavus hit into its third double play of the game as the Auggies won 3-0.

The Gusties managed just three hits from Andrew Woitas, Erik Sveen, and Nate Ruff in the second game as well. Starting pitcher Brandon Knoll worked five innings allowing one earned run on four hits. He walked four batters and struck out three in the losing effort.

Gustavus will face St. Olaf in a key conference doubleheader match-up on Sunday in St. Peter with the first pitch thrown at 1 p.m.

The Gustavus baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn a 7-4 win in game two of a doubleheader with UW-La Crosse on Tuesday in St. Peter. The Eagles prevailed in game one 15-2. Adam Bren was the winning pitcher in game two for the Gusties. Gustavus moved to 14-16 overall, while UW-La Crosse moved to 17-11 overall.

Chad Eul hit a two-out triple to the gap in right center that rolled to the fence in the bottom of the second inning. He crossed home plate when the next batter, Nate Ruff, ripped a double to the outfield to put the Gusties ahead 1-0. The lead did not last long as the Eagles tallied four runs on five hits in their next at-bat to take a 4-1 lead. Jay Fanta come up with the big hit of the inning as he drove in two runs with a two-out double. Gustavus added another run in the next frame as Mike DesLauriers came around to score after a lead-off single. However, UW-La Crosse tacked on runs in each of the remaining innings to cruise to the 15-2 victory.

Tory Herman suffered the loss on the mound as he pitched an inning of relief giving up four runs on five hits. Coach Mike Carroll used five different pitchers during the game. Mike DesLauriers recorded two of the six Gustie hits and also scored a run.

The Eagles was poised to score in the second game when Josh Weber hit a double to lead off the game. With one out, Willy Hanson threw out Weber at third base on the stolen base attempt to end the scoring threat. Neither team was able to drive in runners from scoring position as the score stood at 1-1 at the end of four innings. However, Gustavus was able to get its offense going in the bottom of the fifth inning as Alan Woitas started a five-run rally with a double to right center field. The next four batters recorded singles as Matt Morgan delivered the key hit of the inning when he ripped a two-RBI single up the middle of the infield. Chad Eul recorded the last run of the inning after Nate Ruff was caught in a rundown between first and second base allowing Eul to score from third.

Trailing 6-1, UW-La Crosse mounted a two-out rally in the top of the sixth as it scored three runs on three hits to cut the margin to 6-4. The Gusties manufactured an insurance run after Andrew Woitas led off the bottom half of the inning with a bloop single just behind the shortstop to put Gustavus ahead 7-4. The Eagles put together one last charge in the final at-bat as they had the bases full of runners with two outs. However, Ryan Michaelis struck out the last UW-La Crosse hitter looking to end the comeback and earn the save.

Adam Bren picked up his first win of the season after giving up two hits and no runs in two innings of relief. Alan Woitas led the Gusties at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included two doubles and a run scored. Matt Morgan also drove in two runs, while Chad Eul scored twice.

The Gusties continue their current homestand on Saturday against Augsburg at 1 p.m. in St. Peter.
