Nelson and Geraets to Open Track & Field Championships Thursday Posted on May 25th, 2023 by

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Gustavus track & field team is set to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships hosted by St. John Fisher University and Visit Rochester at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, N.Y. beginning Thursday. Birgen Nelson (Sr., Edina) and Megan Geraets (So., Mankato) open competition for the team Thursday evening.

Nelson returns to the NCAA Championships for the third time in her career as the reigning national champion in the 100-hurdles and runner-up in the 400-hurdles. Nelson will race in the first heat of the 400H, with the prelims set for Thursday at 5:20 p.m. CDT. Nelson’s 400-hurdles time of 59.87 ranks fourth in the nation. The 100-hurdles will run prelims the following day at 4:15 p.m. CDT.

Geraets makes her national debut Thursday, competing in the 200-meter prelims set to begin at 6:20 p.m CDT. Geraets will race in the third heat with a seed time of 24.74 as the 22nd and final entry in the event.

Eight runners from the preliminary races will advance, as the winner of each heat and the next five best times will move onto the finals. Finals for all track events will take place Saturday afternoon. 

In the field, Annika Poe (Sr., Big Lake) will begin competition Friday, while Josh Beiswanger (Sr., Mankato) and Madi Kes (Jr., Jordan) compete Saturday.

6:20 p.m. — 200-meter prelims (Geraets)

Friday, May 26

3 p.m. — shot put prelims and finals (Poe)

4:15 p.m. — 100-hurdles prelims (Nelson)

Saturday, May 27

9 a.m. — triple jump prelims and finals (Kes)

12 p.m. — hammer throw prelims and finals (Beiswanger)

1 p.m. — 100-hurdles finals (Nelson)

2:25 p.m. — 400-hurdles finals (Nelson)

2:50 p.m. — 200-meter finals (Geraets)
