Women’s Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Midwest Regional Posted on September 25th, 2022 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s tennis team hosted the ITA Division III Midwest Regional Championship over the weekend and a number of Gusties made deep runs in both the singles and doubles draws.

Allison Szalay (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa), seeded No. 4 in the region, made a splash in her first collegiate tournament, advancing all the way to the singles semifinals with four victories before losing in three sets to No. 2 seed Kelsey Dorr of St. Catherine. Alli Laux (Jr., Onalaska, Wis.) also represented the Gusties well by claiming four singles victories to advance to the quarterfinals where she lost to No. 3 seed Autumn Bruno of UW-Whitewater.

Kaya De Bruijn (Fy., Maasland, Netherlands) advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of victories but lost to No. 6 seed Cassie Lee of UW-Whitewater. Yuki Oda (Sr., Kawasaki, Japan) also made it to the round of 16 with two wins before losing to Bruno. Molly Austin (Fy., Arden Hills) was the last Gustie to make it to the round of 16 with two wins before losing to Dorr.

Top seed Sabrina Tang of Grinnell advanced to the finals with a three-set win over Lee, while Dorr defeated Szalay to make it to Monday’s final.

Szalay also performed well in doubles with partner Halle Rosentreter (So., Wilmont, Wis.), advancing to the quarterfinals with two decisive wins before an 8-7 (5) loss. Laux and De Bruijn also made it to the quarterfinals with three wins before an 8-0 loss to No. 2 seed Palen and Fuchs of UW-Eau Claire. The UW-Eau Claire duo will face top seed Asfaw and Nechiporuk of Carleton in the final Monday.
