WAVERLY, Iowa — The Gustavus volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference losses to Wartburg and Coe in the Wartburg Tournament Saturday, falling 3-0 to the Knights and 3-1 to the Kohawks.

The Gusties were a formidable opponent for Wartburg through set one, exchanging points before the Knights would pull away to take the victory at 25-20. Building off that momentum, Wartburg got out to a fast start against the Gusties in set two, building a lead to as many as seven, 20-13, before defeating the Gusties by another 25-20 score. Set three was more of the same, as the Knights took the lead and the Gusties could not catch up, falling by a score of 25-17 to round out the sweep for host Wartburg.

And, unfortunately for the Gusties, the second match of the day did not go any better — as the Gusties fell to Coe, 3-1. Coe opened the match with a tight 26-24 victory over the Gusties, only to dominate in the second set, 25-20. While the Gusties pushed back to convincingly win set three 25- 14, the Kohawks would extend their winning streak to six, defeating the Gusties in set four by a score of 25-15.

Sarah Elliott (Sr., Lombard, Ill.) delivered 10 kills while Lauren Klaith (Jr., Rockford) and Marlee Turn (Jr., Kennedy) each added seven to pace the Gustie offense against Wartburg. Kasie Tweet (Jr., Adrian) finished with 22 assists and Maren Sundberg (Fy., Eagan) posted a team-leading 11 digs.

Turn led the way against Coe, hammering out 18 kills and 16 digs for her team-leading sixth double-double, while Courtney Peterson (Sr., Jamestown, N.D.) and Sydney Olson (Sr., Willmar) would add 10 kills each. Tweet chipped in a team, season, and career-best 49 assists, while adding 16 digs for her fourth double-double. Sundberg finished with a team-best 27 digs for the Gusties against Coe.

The Gustavus volleyball team is back in action at Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 27, facing the Vikings for a 7 p.m. non-conference match-up.
