SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus baseball team is in action twice throughout the weekdays as it travels to Hamline for a pair of contests Tuesday with the first game beginning at 4 p.m. before hosting St. Thomas on Wednesday for the conclusion of game two from the contest on April 16. The Gusties enter the games 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the MIAC.

The Series vs. Hamline 

Tuesday’s contests will mark the 162nd and 163rd all-time matchups between the Gusties and Pipers with Gustavus currently holding a 102-58-1 advantage. The two teams last met on May, 2, 2018 with the Gusties winning both contests by scores of 3-0 and 4-3.

Scouting the Pipers

Hamline is most recently coming off a pair of MIAC losses to Macalester on Saturday by scores of 6-2 and 9-2. Through 29 games the Pipers are hitting .265 as a team while opponents are batting .292 versus the Hamline pitching staff. Nolan Schoonveld is the teams leader at the plate, batting .367 and scoring 29 runs, which is 12 more than the next Piper. Zack Langton has also been a solid piece in the Hamline batting order, hitting .280 and getting on base at a clip of .429 thanks to 13 walks and nine hit-by-pitches. Evan Bayer and Jimmy Skroch have thrown the most innings for the Pipers this season with 47.1 and 39.1 respectively. Bayer has accumulated a 2-4 record with a 4.37 ERA while Skroch is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.66.

Scouting the Gusties

Gustavus is coming off their second consecutive sweep in the MIAC with 3-1 and 7-5 wins over Carleton Saturday. Through 25 contests Gustavus is hitting .265 as a team while their pitching staff holds teams to a MIAC-low .237 batting average. Cole Pengilly leads the charge offensively with team-bests in batting average (.405), RBI (16), and runs (19). Matt Berkner is has started every game for Gustavus and he holds an average of .329 while Brice Panning follows behind him at .291. The probable starters for Tuesday’s contests are Panning and Charlie Hutchinson. Panning has thrown seven innings this season, making one start and allowing no earned runs. Hutchinson has started six contests, compiling a 1-3 record and a 3.22 ERA in 22.1 innings.

St. Thomas – Where We Left Off

The Gusties and Tommies battled through 10 complete innings on April 16 and were knotted up at 5-5 before the game was suspended due to darkness. The Tommies used five pitchers in the contest and Shaun Falbo is currently the pitcher of record as he threw the last two innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out two. Adam Stockwell is the pitcher of record for Gustavus as he threw the last four innings for the Black and Gold, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out three. Both teams are set to have their No. 9 hitter step to the plate to lead off the 11th inning.
