Women’s Hockey Set to Play Augsburg This Weekend Posted on January 17th, 2019 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 9 Gustavus women’s hockey team will jump back into conference play when they play Augsburg in a doubleheader this weekend. Friday’s game will be played at Don Roberts Ice Rink at 7 p.m. while Saturday’s game will be in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. The Gusties enter the series at 9-4-2 overall with a 5-2-1 MIAC record while the Auggies come into the contest 7-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play.

Gustavus Game Notes

The Series

Friday’s contest will be the 46th meeting between the two teams with the Gusties holding a 34-9-2 advantage. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 20, 2018 when the Gusties came out with a 3-1 victory.

Scouting the Gusties

Gustavus is coming off a 4-0 victory over UW-Superior on Tuesday night. Through 15 games this season, the Gusties average 2.4 goals per contest while allowing just 1.6. They have been solid on special teams scoring on 9-of-53 power plays (17.0 percent), while successfully killing off 40 of their 47 penalties (85.1 percent). The Gusties have been led by senior captain Allie Stanger who has 13 points on the year on six goals and seven assists, and first years Kristina Press and Lilia Scheid with 10 and nine points respectively. Amanda DiNella has gotten the bulk of the work in net for the Gusties making 14 starts with a save percentage of .928 and a goals against average of 1.76.

Scouting the Auggies

Augsburg is most recently coming off a 7-2 loss to UW-Eau Claire. Special teams have been excellent for the Auggies this year as they are 13-for-53 on power plays (24.3 percent) while they have successfully killed off 48 of their 53 penalties (90.6 percent). Bridget Wagner leads the team in scoring with 14 points on six goals and eight assists while Nikki Nightengale has 11 points (8g, 3a) and Mackenzie Molnar has 10 (4g, 6a). Nightengale and Molnar are each tied for second in the conference with four power play goals. Annie Juergens has started nine games in net recording a save percentage of .872 and a goals against average of 2.67.
