Men’s Tennis Sees Success on Day One of ITA Midwest Regional Posted on September 28th, 2018 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team competed in the first day of the ITA Midwest Regional today and saw many different players advance into the second and third rounds. The Gusties saw eight singles advance to the round of 32, while they have four sets of doubles in the round of 16.

In the singles bracket Gustavus saw a ton of success by advancing eight different Gusties. Those players include: Suyash Gupta, Yassine Derbani, Chase Johnson, Michael O’Neil, Nick Aney, Indraneel Raut, Joseph Punnoose, and Patrick Whaling. In the doubles portion of the ITA’S the Gusties sent four tandems to the round of sixteen. The four pairs are: Michael O’Neil/Xavier Sanga, Yassine Derbani/Nick Aney, Indraneel Raut/Joseph Punnoose, and Patrick Whaling/Chase Johnson.

Gustavus also hosted the Midwest Championships this weekend as well and saw many members of the Gusties notch wins on the day.

On today’s results, head coach Tommy Valentini said, “The guys competed very well today. We had some fun results in both draws, but most of all I was proud of how the guys handled tough conditions, stayed positive, and supported each other. We made some important strides today and are excited for tomorrow’s challenges.”

The Gusties will be back in action again tomorrow morning.
